My last table tonight is still here. Which is usually annoying if they’re not ordering and still talking,

but this table has ordered FIVE bottles of fairly expensive wine, they started with a delightful Oregon Pinot Noir (Walter Scott Cuvée Ruth, 2022, $160) then wanted to switch to something darker and they loved my recommendation of Don Melchor Cabernet from Chile (2011, $175) so much that after getting 3 glasses at a discount from an already opened bottle, they then ordered THREE MORE BOTTLES including two *after dessert* lol. And they’ve tipped $80 extra on top of the $338 gratuity so far, and possibly more coming.

    For a $2000 table on a Tuesday… I’ll gladly stay late lmao

That’s a little more than half a bottle of wine per person. That’s more than reasonable.

Dude recording is driving me bonkers lol I hate double tracking guitars

my guitar had kinda flawed intonation when I first recorded and it’s gotten progressively shittier over the last year, so I’m stuck fighting with tuning forever every session. It’s not like the intonation is so horrible that I can’t sound in key to the naked ear, people who aren’t musicians wouldn’t notice, I can find a compromise on ONE guitar that sounds pretty much in tune… but when you’re double tracking that SLIIIIGHT difference in tuning creates a lot of that warbly chorus effect and it just doesn’t sit in the mix right. Your ears notice something’s a little “off”, even if you don’t have a good enough ear to hear that it’s because one of the notes on one of the guitar tracks is slightly flat/sharp

    1) my guitar’s intonation issues would be fine if I recorded both tracks on the same day and both tracks had the exact same tuning problems in the exact same places, but since it’s got different/more tuning inconsistencies than the original recordings, I can’t rely on a tuner. I literally have to tune by ear just to find a compromise between. When the original track is slightly sharp on this note and this note, but the track I’m recording now is even more sharp on the first note and yet somehow flat on the second note… tuning the open strings the same doesn’t really help you, you’re still gonna hear that dissonance when you press down the frets. You have to find out HOW slightly sharp or HOW slightly flat to tune each string so that the tuning matches as close as possible for THAT song depending on where the chords are. UGH

    2) could I fix my guitar’s intonation? Sure, but is that worth it NOW, no! The original tracks still have slightly flawed tuning, so perfect tuning is gonna be dissonant with some parts

    3) another annoying thing is I recorded the first tracks live, every song start to finish… which means each take goes sliiightly out of tune in various ways. So even if I get the tuning exactly right for part of the song, and I get into take 10+ and I’m in a groove and the guitar is staying stable… the tuning is still wrong for a later part of the song and I have to re-set my guitar and get all the strings used to a slightly different tension all over again before it stays in THAT tuning

all this to say I’m never recording live again lol, adding overdubbed doubled-guitars to the live tracks months later is a pain in the ASS when you layer albums the way I like to. Better to just record part by part and get both guitars for each part exactly right and then move on.

TLDR for the rest of the thread -

Intonation is when your guitar is in tune on some frets but not in tune on others. Usually has to do with the angle of your guitar’s neck and the tightness of the screws (determining the exact length of the string) if either of these things are even half a millimeter off, it can cause the tuning to not be consistent across the guitars whole fretboard. So fret 1 can be in tune, fret 7 can be way flat, and then fret 12 can be back in tune again lol. (when strings get old and worn out it also fucks up that perfect length ratio.)

it’s not a BIG issue with my guitar, just a minor one that bothers me a lot more than it would bother most people lol. it becomes a larger and more noticeable issue when you’re doing “double tracking”, a very popular recording tactic in punk and alternative rock, which is playing the same exact chords on two different tracks on opposite sides, to create a surround-sound effect that drives the atmosphere of the music. The human ear struggles to pick up on minor tuning imperfections, even 20 year musicians with strong sense of pitch like me can fool myself into thinking a slightly sharp or slightly flat note sounds in tune, but when it’s playing the same thing and it’s not exactly the same tuning you notice they grind against each other weird.

So, the intonation being different now while double tracking than it was on the original track is what I’m dealing with. Recording is fucking complicated lol
