I think I just dislike how new construction tends to look. It’s bland to me and screams GENTRIFIED PART OF TOWN haha, maybe this opinion is more psychological / what I ASSOCIATE new construction with, than tangible? The inside is nice yeah but the look of the exterior and the lot don’t give me the same aesthetic satisfaction as a colonial bungalow or Victorian row home with old growth trees all around

Yes this, that's what I was getting at. I think suburban houses are just a part of expansion in general and not really gentrification at all, but those older houses are what are actually around the gentrification even if the house itself is not a part of that

In Maryland it’s actually more expensive to live in suburbs than in Baltimore lol

maybe not after you adjust for property taxes, but for renters, that’s certainly true
