I don’t really look for “difficult” either per se, at least not in terms of “difficult to play”. Sometimes it does come with the territory but it’s not the focus. I more so just *subjectively* judge the “melodic creativity” of a lead guitar riff / solo, in the sense that if the notes chosen for the riff / solo are too predictable it’s not that exciting to me. I find J Mascis melodies to be quite predictable and he’s actually more fun and creative on the guitar when he’s being noisy and bending notes out of key than when he is deliberately choosing notes.

 

Drive isn’t my issue, it’s living in NH vs MA

 

So if you’re a guitar centric band that plays solos that I find to be largely predictable and “too obvious” and the guitar is the selling point of the band, it’s just not gonna move me as much as a guitarist playing stuff like “damn that’s a really creative idea I wasn’t expecting that” and as a person who’s been playing for 20 years I suppose my bar for that is pretty high lol

my opinions are weird though, for a lot of people what I would consider the “predictable melody” is the RIGHT melody that feels the best

 

Well the other day you said something about having to drive 40 minutes, that’s what I was referring to lol. What are the other drawbacks of NH?

 

Not every band has to appeal to me with guitar details either I like other things in music of course, but if you’re the guitar band with the guitarist that gets talked about a lot for his guitar skills I become a little more judgmental about it haha

 

And even when you talk about J Mascis’ noisier and less melodic solos… well I just talked about Ira Kaplan and he’s amazing at that shit lol so I still rather listen to YLT. I think Ira’s way more skilled than J Mascis and you don’t see an Ira Kaplan Stratocaster being sold anywhere / you don’t see him on any “top 200 guitarists” lists. but Yo La Tengo’s often more lo-fi production didn’t do him any favors when it comes to centering his guitar expression the same way Dinosaur Jr’s does

(All of this is after I just listened to like 12 DJ songs on the way to get weed and back lol)

I do like Dino Jr guitar tones and that does factor in for me and make me wanna give him a little more credit. I also thought their cover of that Cure song was a very interesting take on it. And building songs off driving guitar power chords and punk inspired drum beats was still kind of a novelty/specific “style”/“aesthetic” in the 1990s and wasn’t as ubiquitous and played out as it is now - so I can also accept I might have liked them a lot more if I hadn’t already heard countless 2000s and 2010s bands structure their songs like that. Def would’ve felt more “new” if i heard them back then

My bad sorry I should have clarified more … the driving is an issue for my wife and her work. I don’t mind being 30-40+ away from her family and where we live now just in general.

However, the issue short term is Trump/Musk made her go into work 5 days and she also isn’t much of a high way driver so it’s weighing that in the short term until she is laid off/gets new job lol

MA vs NH is definitely different in terms of property taxes, MA hospitals, MA school systems in our area, FMLA benefits, etc. And there’s also just the Trumpy takeover of NH that stinks a little lol

One last little thing, maybe I’m wrong that the predictable note always bothers me. Every note in the classic rock throwback solo on “I’m Not Okay” by MCR is exactly the note you would expect - and that’s the point and that’s what makes it so great and cathartic lol. It was a creative decision to be like “this bridge of the song should suddenly sound like 80s hard rock” and I do like that decision being made consciously in that song lol. Highly situational I suppose
