Hi guys I’m alive. Chicago went okay. Band we played with, A Mammoth Task, was sick but yet again only drew a couple people. Me and Jared both lamenting that the best bands musically aren’t always the best bands to play with, sucks to play amazing to nobody cause you don’t know how to promote. However we went to an open mic afterward at Gallery Cabaret and made friends / got new fans out of it. Still like 25-30 people there when we finally got on (we signed up at 6:38 instead of 6:30 and were 15th cause we had just loaded out from our afternoon show).

The open mic host was originally very grumpy that we brought our own gear - but I have a lot of experience with grumpy open mic sound guys and smoothed things over enough that he was cool with our set + setup & breakdown taking 18 minutes instead of 15 lol. He just wanted to make sure we didn’t take 43 minutes. Apparently dude has done sound for Grateful Dead and other huge bands. I was very relieved we made things right with him and he gave me some cough drops for the rest of tour, you can tell he has a soft heart underneath the “I gotta tell these bullshit bands off before they take advantage of our open mic” shell.

Coming to Columbus to feature their open mic went great. We sold some merch and paid for our food, gas, and a hotel tonight so that’s a W. Didn’t pay for the drink I bought an awesome woman tonight but whatever lmao. We definitely left an impact on the people here. Could play here again but we got invited to play some secret DIY warehouse that 100-150 punks show up at to drink and party every show and that sounds better to me. We would crush it with our noisier punk songs in front of that kinda crowd.

We now have connections and fans in a town we’ve never been in, on a date that would’ve originally just been a money spending day off if I hadn’t called the venue a couple days ago. Onward to another open mic “featured act” slot in Dayton, Ohio -hope it goes great!! In the meantime we have a hotel so I’ll get good sleep and then we have plenty of time to go see some nature or something and maybe even street busk in Dayton before our next gig.

I should clarify the Chicago show wasn’t to nobody, we did play to about 20 people outside of the other bands and we did get paid $70 plus sell a couple shirts so that wasn’t a failure. I felt like I sang like shit cause the dry air of Detroit had just “got me” and made my sinuses all fucked up. And my guitar kept going out of tune and I accidentally fucked up my pedalboard and made only one amp audible. But instrumentally we were good. Our friend / fan Sam Farmer who goes to a lot of shows and records a lot of bands (he saw us randomly in January) was there again for us and brought a friend so we technically drew two people! Hell yeah. He’ll have another video up of us on YouTube soon I’m sure.

Dead Dog dropped out (probably cause it was Mother’s Day and they were like fuck this I’m spending time with mom) and that sucks cause they would’ve 1) brought more people 2) brought a “fun” element to a show that was little too much “technical bands that require your attention”. However it’s ironic the bands that last minute joined to replace them drew more people than Mammoth Task lol. They drew like, their singer’s dad and their guitarist’s girlfriend. Seppukku Survivor was like if Coheed leaned into their metal side and were more instrumental, they and the Tracies drew a handful of people each.

playing an afternoon show INSIDE on a good weather day, on MOTHER’s DAY, in a big ass expensive ass market like Chicago, and still drawing enough people / sellin enough shirts to get paid, is a huge W And I should give myself more credit. Most bands are lucky to play to 15-20 people in Chicago their first two times in such a competitive market, let alone have those 15/20 people be STOKED about them. Eventually we will build it up - we got connects to play a huge DIY event that happens on a little concrete island near a bridge in Chicago, that like over 100 people attend.

Admittedly it has been several years, but Dayton always surprised me as a surprisingly cool town considering where its at. Obviously has a ton of military connections, but it was super well set up for younger people/nightlife. My kayaking buddy still lives here (he's doing air force drone stuff), and we used to always stop there on our drives to Iowa and check out the breweries, etc. Hilariously, one of our last visits before COVID was us hanging with some one night stand he had and the next night he met his now wife.

he didn't actually break in. as i said, I was sitting in the car and the doors were locked lol. he did slam on my rear windshield like three times and I started backing up and he jumped out of the way and slammed on my driver side window but when I got home didn't seem like there was any damage to the glass. fucking weirdo.

its silly that its over tonight. a show this good deserves to be in the spotlight longer than 4 weeks. the 3 episode dumps are dumb.
