also wanted to share this even though i will sound like a homer

TLDR
- Rice paid out some restitution to the victims before submitting a guilty plea, which usually leads to more lenient sentencing
- the deferred probation thing means if he screws up again he'll likely receive a more severe sentence than if it was a first time offense
- not an uncommon situation for first time offenders who were reckless but not malicious - ie did not actively intend to harm someone
- usually doesn't happen without approval of victims
- all the civil cases are resolved and Rice will likely be paying out these victims for years to come as he certainly doesn't have like 6 million dollars he can just pay out immediately since he's on a 2nd round rookie contract
