And re: Josh about the tech job, I’ve already mentioned in here that I got a tech degree because I felt like that was less soul sucking than other business jobs, when I was originally in school tech was how you made everyone else’s job more efficient and seemed like it had positive impact on society, and I told myself then if I went back to school that’s what I’d study.

only to find when I finally graduated in 2022, that AI and data science is now the CORE of what makes business soul sucking and is literally the method how businesses do the exact things that I consider to be really bad for society

I could still get certified in some programming language or in data science software and get a job like that probably, but since this Somm path opened itself up to me, I’d genuinely be happier and more morally sound making good money from selling wine than from working in tech

Basically I don’t want to be part of the growth and proliferation of AI & data science unless I’m working for a company that’s using it for good and not just to like, rig the economy and politics, and be invasive of people’s privacy for the sake of marketing / surveillance, and create “algorithms” that throw needy people off of insurance plans and government assistance, etc

It’s definitely partially an autistic thing, but doing something I feel morally and spiritually satisfied doing is legitimately more important to me than maximizing the money my skills can make me

I wouldn't necessarily say this is true unless you're in like, software development type jobs. On the infrastructure side of things, it's not all that prevalent. I will say though, a lot of people (and this isn't just directed at you) hopped on the tech train during covid, especially in the cybersecurity world, because all of these influencers said it's cool and an easy way to make good money, when in reality, it's extremely hard to break into cybersecurity (there's no such thing as an entry-level cyber job) and a lot of people ended up with these degrees that they can't even use.
Now compound that with all the tech layoffs over the past 2-3 years, and you've got people with decades of experience out of work looking for jobs, so those people without the experience have truly gotten fucked.

There's nothing wrong with having gotten the degree with that intention, but if you've found something you truly like better that's completely unrelated then good for you

If I wasn’t REALLY GOOD at restaurant work I would’ve had to make that sacrifice in my life already, but being able to be a leading server at nicer and nicer restaurants - and now having the opportunity to be a certified Somm at Baltimore’s only Michelin-rated hotel, has made it possible for me to keep up with this inflating economy. If I was still working at Carrabba’s ass places you’re damn right I would’ve had to change careers

Yeah I kinda got backdoor lucky with this, and it’s the reason why my dad and my mom backed off of trying to encourage me to get one of those jobs. They’ve both acknowledged that if I did that I might be laid off right now / might run the risk of AI literally making my job obsolete - as someone who would have less than 3 years experience by now, I’d be one of the most expendable people at most tech jobs

so if I can still make six figures being a sommelier… well, AI isn’t gonna take away that job, and even as we fall further into income inequality, rich people are always gonna wanna eat in fine restaurants and buy wine lol

I'll be honest being a sommelier sounds cool as shit, and like you said if you're working for a very high-end restaurant I'm sure you can make really good money. I personally wouldn't ever want to be working restaurant hours but that sounds far more exciting than pushing buttons all day

If I could make as much as I do now just doing food prep Monday-Friday 8-4 I would 100% do that.

Yeah the hours is the toughest part but I’m so accustomed to it by now, not to mention, touring musicians have to operate on the same hours lol. So my hustle is aligned with working nights and sleeping in late too, I gotta have peak energy between 6PM and 11 PM for both jobs lol

I’m not a Somm YET but I get my level one certification in 3 weeks, going to New Orleans to get it baby

and I’ve actually already been studying ahead for the level 2 and 3 certifications. Those actually involve taste tests not just knowing theory, and I’ve been doing a wine tasting group with other established level 1, 2, and 3 Somms every Wednesday for 6 months now. I’m getting pretty good at it, like to the point I can correctly guess some wines pretty consistently
