Making me wish I had the money to just go to a random restaurant in DC every weekend, there is so much fucking great intentional food that’s open late in just the 14th street bar district let alone DuPont Circle, Columbia Heights, Shaw, Waterfront etc etc

just an elite food city. Especially for African, South / Central American, Western European (especially French, Greek, and Spanish Tapas), and Middle Eastern food. It’s probably not nearly as special as the west coast for Asian food, or as good as the south for American food like BBQ and soul and diners, not amazing at seafood as coastal Maryland or New England, or as good as NYC for street food / Jewish / Italian etc… but it’s VERY good at a LOT of niche things that most cities might have one good spot. Peruvian, Ethiopian, Afghan, Turkish, Somalian, El Salvadoran, etc, & even though it’s not amazing Korean/Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese, it is amazing for Indian / Sri Lankan food. Also some of the best straight up Mexican food I’ve personally ever had (note that this does not include Texas and the southwest, I imagine those areas are even better).

But I’d love to see LA obviously and I’m curious how much better it might be even than DC food-wise. Best place I’ve been for Asian food in particular is Atlanta so far so I’d really love to see how much the west coast kicks it up a few notches in comparison.

 

Baltimore does Italian, Greek, Polish food better, does better pub food and pizza, better seafood, and cheaper prices for all of that than DC. My favorite Ethiopian and Afghani spot are also up here even though DC overall has more options and more of them are good.

But the diversity and late night accessibility of DC is far superior and a much higher percentage of restaurants there are fucking GOOD rather than just decent. Like, while there are extremely good restaurants (and also really great greasy pubs / seafood shacks) in Baltimore and it’s better than a lot of similar sized cities at food… some shitty restaurants with cliche menus also survive in Baltimore, especially if it’s a neighborhood relic. More people here just have bad taste and stuff whatever in their face lol. By comparison, any shitty restaurant would go out of business so fast in DC cause the bar / people’s standards for good food is pretty high, even in the suburbs.

My friend ordered a fuck ton of food when it’s only two of us and I’m like bruh

 

Only things northeast Florida is really good for are seafood, river/swamp food (fish camps that sell alligator and low country boils etc), Cuban food, and specifically tacos. It’s good at diners too but Atlanta was way better so I’m not that impressed by Jax diners anymore except my favorite one haha.

Jax does have enough great restaurants to have a respectable food scene, people who aren’t from there probably underrate it a lot, but it doesn’t excel in international food and diversity the same way that… better cities do lol

 

Jax diners were great. Charlotte was so disappointing in that regard

 

He ordered a fuck ton plates of meat and sushi and we managed to bring it down to only $5 in leftover fees but I’m full forever.

 

You do pee a lot. But if you want to hang as long as possible beer water beer water is the only way.

 

Or just drink beers until you black out and your body will continue to hang while your mind goes to sleep
