I do wanna be clear I’m not saying mewithoutyou is the most skilled or talented band (although Ricky is a great drummer) but their synergy and ability to create and play with atmosphere is pretty great

and tbh saying they’re “above the scene” means like, “very good band” not “one of the best bands of the generation”. Scene music is gimmicky as shit and I hate most of it now lol so don’t take this as me like, exalting them the way people act like Jimmy Eat World is the Beatles lol

 

But actually I changed my mind, the best ex scene band is actually Pianos Become The Teeth

 

I do take it the same way because I think that's dismissive of a lot of great albums in "the scene"

I don’t really understand what makes an album one genre over another and don’t really care to learn

 

I guess they kinda count. Who did they use to tour with a lot?

 

Me neither which is why in this case I do think "the scene" is a fair qualifier

Gives a good idea of "this is the type of music they played around" rather than nailing it down to a specific genre

Tbh you’re right cause I’m remembering a lot more bands on the precipice of the genres that were fucking awesome

BTBAM and At the Drive-In definitely come to mind as really good ones of the era, and Minus the Bear for sure if they also fall in this category

 

And I think My Chemical Romance deserves / fully earns their popularity even if they’re not my thing

 

I like Alexisonfire too and of course Thursday still rips

 

Sorry to quote again but I saw a YouTube video (lol I know) about genres that was really interesting talking about how a lot of what makes a genre a genre is more about the "ethical code" than musical qualities, like about how being in certain music scenes you're expected to abide by certain rules for the "integrity" of it (like for example how integrity is different for pop vs hip hop vs punk) and about how the social norms are what really make it up. It was very interesting to think about

 

Speaking of bad band names. My first band was called My Dearest Apollo lol

 

The first band I joined was called Chasing Scarlet

Not gonna dox myself on the band I played in longterm cuz I don't feel like digging that up lmao
