Marine scientists literally already designed a manned submarine that made it to the bottom of Marianna’s Trench, nearly THREE TIMES deeper than the Titanic shipwreck… in 1960!!!!

So let’s rephrase to illustrate the absurdity - the technology to do this *correctly* had already existed for over SIXTY years, it actually was not an experimental voyage at all! It was him ignoring marine scientists/engineers who *already know for a fact* how to design a submarine that can withstand that pressure and all the ways that have failed before

 

A human has been 34,000 feet deep before, most recently in 2012 and 2019, so there’s just no excuse other than extreme, homicidal negligence / cost cutting to design a submarine that can’t handle the conditions at 12,000 feet

 

The guy was just so convinced he had figured out a cheaper alternative with carbon fiber and wouldn’t fucking shut up about it

 

When scientists literally told him “carbon fiber delaminates at that pressure and the submarine WILL explode if / when that happens”
