Pittsburgh’s really a sister city though, they offer a lot of similar stuff, if anything Pittsburgh is even more grimy and working class but with the trade off of having even better nature and stronger city culture, and being so cheap it makes Baltimore look expensive. Meanwhile Baltimore is better in diversity, food, proximity to other great places to visit, walkability, and has a slight edge in architecture given how many gorgeous Victorian brownstones are everywhere (despite a less impressive skyline)

cities Ive been to, that I like more than Baltimore, that are “possible” for me.

1) PHILADELPHIA
Philly is just bigger, denser, edgier, cooler, more intense Baltimore. With that comes more expense, more risk of random crime, more noise at night, more traffic, way worse parking, more disgusting trash and other… stuff on the streets and on the subway, and way less nature / actually pretty neighborhoods and suburbs than Baltimore has. You already got more of those undesirable things in DC than Baltimore and DC is gentrified as fuck, Philly you’re just raw dogging city life.

In spite of all that, Philly is the most down to earth and has the strongest city-culture of all the legit metropolis sized cities in the country outside of New York, and it appeals to my musician spirit. There isn’t a better place in this country to pursue punk rock or indie rock right now. If my drummer JJ was down to move there with me and split a much nicer apartment or even townhouse than I can afford solo, I’m fucking there. But he doesn’t want to and life is much more comfortable for me here.

2) NEW ORLEANS
I like New Orleans equally as much if not slightly more, and all my mom’s side of the family is there who I keep having FOMO about not being super close with. But global warming flood hazard and even worse humid-heat than Florida take it down a few notches as a place to live (even though it’s more fun to visit).

It’s also arguably more expensive than Baltimore depending on where you live, and much like Baltimore/Philly, New Orleans has a lot of rough areas you can’t just decide to live in cause it’s cheap. It’s also more in-your-face about being an industrial port city than Baltimore already is and while a lot of the inner city is gorgeous, there’s much less of the metro area that’s like “that’s beautiful I’d be proud to come home to that view.”

I’d only wanna live there if I found the RIGHT fine dining restaurant (and there are MANY to choose from) in one of the areas of downtown that’s actually beautiful and has that old French / Spanish vibe of buildings with the mossy trees everywhere. like Audubon / Uptown / Harahan / Garden District / CENTRAL Metairie / Treme / Lakeview / Freret / ESPECIALLY Marigny that’s a dream neighborhood.

3) ATLANTA
I’d straight up rank Atlanta above Baltimore and DC (not both of them together, but each of them separately) if it was still 2019 prices. Me and Matt legit lived in a fancy neighborhood loaded with amazing houses and gorgeous parks, in a part of Atlanta that had amazing bars and music venues everywhere. It was a small 2 bedroom but we paid like $1200 flat for it. Culturally this city has had an enormous renaissance the last 15ish years but the problem is the economy kept up. It’s still so cool and such a beautiful city, and close enough to other solid cities (Charlotte, Asheville, Nashville, Chattanooga, Athens, Birmingham) and north Georgia’s nice mountains / nature etc that I think its still “worth the cost” to not live in the most ideal area if I can still have access to it all. But that old apartment of ours is like $2200 a month now lmao, and living outside of that super ideal East Atlanta area means dealing with more of Atlanta’s horrible traffic, so that drops it down the list considerably.

4) CHICAGO
This city has so much to offer my ambitions, and is so cheap in comparison to other cities like that (NYC, LA, SF, Boston, Seattle… Philly’s the closest but still costs way more) that I actually would deal with Midwest winter for this place. But even still that’s 5-6 months of the year that I hate outside and am more depressed lol. I’ve gotten to acclimate to Baltimore having 1.5-2.5 months of that depending on the year, anything is possible, but it took me this long just to handle an easy version of a “real winter” lol.

5) MINNEAPOLIS
It’s just cold as fuck. That’s it. Everything else about the city rules lol. It’s the perfect “Midwest city” if you’re not cut out for a jam packed place like Chicago. If I wasn’t a little baby boy about cold weather it might have been where I went after the pandemic.

6) NEW YORK
I’m Alice in Wonderland here. I adore the concept of it and I’m that rare person who is cut out to be on my feet 70+ hours a week, and who actually would go explore NYC in my free time and take advantage of the cultural experience, rather than going to the same places all the time.

I know in my heart though that even if I worked at a 5 star restaurant, I’d need another job to fund my band and hit the catch 22 of having no time/energy left for my band. A pipe dream best reserved for dreams. In reality I’m content that if I ever get to a place of financial breathing room, it’s easy for me to simply visit the imaginary wonderland that is NYC from here, without shackling myself to its wage-slavery levels of extreme capitalism, and an art scene so intimidating it would make a 20 year dedicated, naturally gifted guitarist like me feel like nothing special.

the reason it’s still possible… is I can still get a tech job. Who knows wtf NYC pays for that shit.

7) PITTSBURGH - reasons listed in the quotes above.

impossible cities that I like more than Baltimore that I’ve been to:

Seattle, Boston, DC sorta (I like living inner city Baltimore more than inner city DC, but I MOST wish I could afford a house in DC’s Maryland suburbs and have easy train/subway access to both cities).

Cities slightly below Baltimore on my list that I’ve been to that would be doable for me and I’d probably still enjoy:

-Nashville
-Tampa
-Chicago’s Indiana suburbs
-New Jersey
-Dallas
-Cincinnati
-Cleveland
-Houston

Cities that are cool as fuck but are not worth how damn much they cost:

-San Francisco
-Honolulu
-San Diego
-(south) Austin (and even then it barely makes the list cause north Austin is a corporate shell of what it used to be)
I would list Charlotte but it’s not even “cool as fuck” lol, it used to be “charming southern town to live in cheap” but it’s priced way above its league now imo

cities I haven’t been to that I’m curious how much I’d like:

Los Angeles (I consider it a lot, enough to maybe put it on the list. I love the beach and extreme sports but also mountains and wine country all being in the region. I love the art and culture scene and I know I would vibe with people there, and find my way to the actually cool shit underneath the surface pretend-cool shit. As far as fine dining, it’s a New York-level restaurant scene that I actually COULD afford to have one job and rent a place if I worked somewhere nice. This is easily the best fit for me of every US city I haven’t been to. )
