Sean posted about Oasis right after you so I missed your post. How’s the hand healing?

It’s great my stitches come out tomorrow. Healing went without a hitch.

My knee is healing slower but even if I got an MRI they’d just tell me the same thing I’m already doing, rest / ice / compression / elevation so I feel like eh. I’m pretty sure no ligaments are torn cause I can still walk and change directions fine and I won’t need surgery, so patience and keeping the swelling down in my knee is the only solution regardless

That’s good the hand heeled well! Obviously the knee sucks and hopefully it’s not just one those “you’re in your 30’s so it hurts now” things if it’s not like a tear. Ugh, that sucks though

My ex from high school/freshman year was obsessed with Sufjan so I haven’t listened much from that point on lol, but Illinois is a banger album

Illinois is still the best Sufjan album and one of the best and most layered / ambitious indie records of the 00s

He has a ton of range. A lot of people disagree and say Carrie & Lowell or Age of Adz but tbh it’s not close to me

orchestral / baroque indie Sufjan > lo fi, simple folk Sufjan >>> electronic Sufjan for me

my top five albums of his are

    1) Illinois
    2) Carrie & Lowell
    3) The Avalanche
    4) Michigan
    5) Seven Swans

Michigan would be higher if it had less fluff. That one has songs with a different mood than the rest of his discography so I still spin it decently often but it’s rarely a start to finish listen. However Illinois fully justifies almost its entire 72 minute runtime, only the very last song feels like it’s too long / drags

If you’re like Matt and the lyrics are super important to you and great backing music feels less valuable / cheaper if the lyrics on top aren’t strong or organized into a focused narrative, then you will def like Carrie & Lowell more.

The lyrics on Illinois are supposed to be mostly historical and personal anecdotes but sometimes he gets lost in trying to paint a full picture of what happened in a short stanza by using large vocabulary instead of finding more efficient, poignant synecdoches to use that will imply to the listener what he means. He over explains / sometimes is just listing events that happened, instead of leaving clever hints

but he still pulls off a few emotional / relatable songs on it like Chicago and Casimir Pulaski Day and obviously John Wayne Gacy has a harrowing summary of his… activities that sticks in your mind.

For me though it’s always music first and then great lyrics are a bonus, as long as they’re at least average and not actively cringy they won’t take away from it for me. So the 10/10 music arrangements on Illinois are unbeatable
