Agreed. I thought this season could go 2 ways. They had mega low expectations. Either he saves his job/program or it completely falls off the rails and this is his last year. (it's the latter)

These games literally pay for those schools entire athletic programs

In Randall’s defense, I’d strongly prefer some level of revenue sharing across CFB that kept those programs alive and also spared us from FCS vs top G4 team games to what we do now

Fair but until they find a different way this current model isn’t going away

again it also isn’t like those teams don’t occasionally win, shit they will hold onto for the program’s entire history lol

i tore a hole in the fabric of time Moderator

I appreciate that schools like Tennessee and Texas (only know these two because of a recent convo with Dustin, but I’m sure others do) always try to keep one of them in state so that the money supports fellow “local” schools and students who probably dreamed of getting to play for their flagship university still get the chance to play in those stadiums despite maybe not being up to that talent level.

It’s definitely a necessary evil to fund lower programs but I get Randall’s point. I also think comparing South Florida beating Florida to Ohio State playing Grambling is a little disingenuous of a comparison lol

Idk where the sweet spot is between “the underdogs sometimes win and upsets are iconic” and “it’s silly that The University of Georgia [or insert big college team] plays 1/4 of its schedule against teams outside of the top *100* in the sport” but current state is oversaturated in those kind of cupcake games for my ideal state

we’re also talking three out of conference games a year in a 12 game season. and with more and more SEC/Big Ten teams playing each other every year at the beginning of the season. we’re really discussing one or two games per a schedule each season. kinda blowing the proportion of this up a bit.

like yeah an alabama or a georgia or even wisconsin might play a cupcake week 2, 80% of the rest of their schedule are teams that could feasibly make the playoff lol

i’m not trying to be mean or whatever about it but @Randall Mentzos you've mentioned several times before you don’t like college football and don’t really watch it. it could maybe just maybe be that if you paid attention to it at all you’d understand why it works this way. it isn’t a thing that college diehards really have an issue with and there is probably a reason why.

I wouldn’t still say i don’t like CFB. I’ve wanted to watch it more the last couple years than my jobs have allowed tbh. Working every Saturday makes it tough haha

but I’m not saying “only playoff teams should play other playoff teams” my point is more what @koryoreo @whitenblue88 were saying that it’s fine within reason but if you’re going TOO far apart in terms of competitiveness my opinion changes. USF / Florida makes sense, in state rivalry and USF has been actually competitive occasionally. Ohio State / Grambling doesn’t haha

But like to someone who isn’t a die hard fan of a specific college, week 2 of college football is mostly games that would’ve been pointless to watch, that’s more the angle I’m coming from lol. But whatever I get it, Troy did almost upset Clemson, etc, I guess if the huge upsets happen enough it’s worth it

Michigan Oklahoma is great I have 0 qualms with out of conference matchups between teams that are good in their conferences

and yeah USF / Florida is a big upset but I mean USF also beat Boise State they are not a bad team by any stretch, and didn’t they have a recent season they were ranked? I hope it’s clear with my clarification that that kind of game is fine and not as extreme of a competition difference as I’m talking about
