There were some rumblings that they were going to release Fontecchio to get the cap savings. He had a higher deadcap that Highsmith so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. But they don't really have any other players under contract that they'd want to move that would bring them under that tax line without moving more than one guy and still have room, they have to sign two more players to standard contracts for the roster size requirement I believe.
I'm not defending the move at all and I think it's dumb to move a good player to save a billionaire money. That's just where their logic is at, I believe. Which is also frustrating because they had until the trade deadline to figure it out, this didn't need to be done now.

Not surprised. They wanted to keep him and couldn’t sign him to another 2-way. He looked good early last season before the Achilles so I hope he’s back in form.
