"- the NFL markets all of their teams. They don’t care who is good. They will put anyone on TV who is good. The NBA absolutely sucks at this. I have no clue why they refuse to do this. It’s their biggest flaw in my opinion. All but a handful of teams are at a huge disadvantage IMO." yeah but i think the NFL is just more popular than the NBA to the casual fan. people will tune in for thursday night football to watch the raiders play the jaguars even if theyre not fans of either team. idk if people are turning on a national broadcast of kings pelicans on a tuesday or wednesday night. now to be fair, the NBA isnt currently even trying this, so it is hard to say with certainty that it wouldnt be successful, but it feels like its just always some rotation of lakers, celtics, nuggets, thunder, spurs, warriors on the national games during the week and you'll only see a smaller market team if one of the big guys are playing them.
This would be more compelling of an argument if the biggest draw in the league this season wasn’t from San Antonio and the best team in the league wasn’t from Oklahoma like yes the lakers and Knicks will still have the most viewership but this year kind of was the year of casuals tuning in for small market games
Think that mostly comes down to the scarcity of games. 1 game a week for a team in NFL is more appointed viewing than game 3 or 4 in a week possibly for NBA, but as we know, the NBA isn’t likely to rejig their regular season schedule.
thats also true, and also why it just wont ever be apples to apples comparing the NFL to the NBA youre better off comparing the NBA to MLB, but MLB doesnt market anything except shohei ohtani.
Another (massive) difference between the leagues is that the NFL has non-guaranteed contracts. There's far less risk attached to giving a huge deal to someone, and most trades net teams a tote bag and a pile of Olive Garden coupons. So as stated by others, apples and oranges.
There should be fewer games for rest concerns and the health of the players but that has nothing to do with combatting tanking. If anything, it would make tanking worse. Teams would realize there season is going nowhere much quicker and speed up the doodoo ball much faster.
