I am hoping for more individual non-swimming or gymnastic gold medals though. So far Lee Kiefer in fencing is the only one. That hopefully should change tomorrow with BMX and Surfing

 

Sorry if this is too off topic: Is it odd to anyone else that North Korea competes in the Olympics? And that they have fans in the audience? Maybe my understanding of citizens of NK isn't 100% correct, but I didn't think they would allow citizens to travel for that, unless that's part of the facade they are trying to present to other countries.

Regret that I didn't watch any Judo, Table Tennis, or Shooting

 

Part of why I find the BMX Freestyle so fascinating is it's like a bunch of grizzled old X-Games vets who faced eachother for years on the park, now facing each other again but in a head coaching battle having their pupils go at it.

You got Ryan Nyquist coaching USA, Jamie Bestwick coaching UK, and Daniel Dhers coaching China. 3 of the greatest BMX riders of their generation coaching the 3 top squads in this event.

 

sure will get plenty in athletics and a bunch in wrestling too

not like the US only dominates at swimming. still really strong elsewhere too. its just odd to me when people act like total medals is a fair way to compare countries when that winds up rewarding countries that are better at specific sports

 

So I think athletes have historically been allowed to travel. You have to request permission so they generally qualify. The issue comes with earning money, as they have to give lots of it to the North Korean government, which has caused issues before.

They actually had a really solid young football player called Han Kwang-Son whose story is worth looking up. He played in Italy before transferring to a Qatari club. UN sanctions introduced in 2021 against North Koreans working abroad meant that he had his contract terminated and had to return home, where he has been ever since. It’s pretty sad.

They actually qualified for the 2016 (iirc) world cup too. Apparently they didn’t show any of it and claimed they beat Brazil lol.

That's Team USA's closing ceremony outfit. It's rad as hell.

 

I caught a little bit of it. Kind of wild to basically see pickup half court basketball morph into an Olympic sport. Setting looks cool, very fast paced.

 

Evans/Budinger lost to The Netherlands 2-0 today in Beach Volleyball. Still in knockout round contention though.

The other Team USA duo of Partain/Banesh beat Morocco today 2-0 and they're back into contention.

 

Yeah I watched a couple games. Pretty fun, quick and breezy games

I just watched a repeat of 3x3 basketball. Both US men's and women's 3x3 squads lost their openers.

 

Someone tell NBC we absolutely do not need Colin Jost at the Olympics.

What’s the drama there someone explain

 

Can someone who knows tennis explain this Coco Gauff situation to me please? It sounds like she got screwed by the refs causing her to lose (and therefore get eliminated from the Olympics singles competition) but I don't know enough about tennis.

At least she still has doubles.

 

Skinner was on the 2020 team. Earlier this year she pretty much called all of the USA gymnasts except for Biles lazy and untalented. And she also partially blamed it on SafeSport, the organization put in place to prevent sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by the coaches.
