    The rivalry is back on

Houston selects Roman Wilson, WR, Michigan

this stupid team has signed 9 defensive FAs (5 of which are penciled in as starters) and stinky Joe Mixon is the only offensive addition. I don’t think they could signal any harder if they tried that they’re going offense early and often this draft.

  5. Atlanta Falcons select Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan

A tremendously good and consistent slot receiver capable of making plays deep and in the backfield.

The Dallas Cowboys have traded picks 56 (round 2) and 87 (round 3) to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for picks 44 (round 2) and 112 (round 4).

    Making selection now...

With the 44th pick, the Dallas Cowboys select Jonathon Brooks - RB - Texas.

The Cowboys starting RB right now is Rico Dowdle. Say it with me, Rico Dowdle. The injury to Jonathon Brooks doesn't scare me one bit. He nearly broke every Bijan Robinson record. He's possibly the best weapon in the Longhorns offense of last year, and now gets to stay in the Lone Star State and continue to dominate. Teams will have a hard time picking their poison with the Cowboys weapons at WR and their inexplicable ability to get any TE open when they also have to fear Jonathon Brooks on nearly every snap.

The Patriots have cap space for days so for anyone looking to move on from decent vets on bad deals, HMU. Particularly on the OL.

Colts select Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon

Given that Ballard specifically said he didn’t give Reggie Wayne enough personnel in the WR room last season and has promptly added nothing, I’d be shocked if one of the first couple picks wasn’t on WR (and also wouldn’t be shocked if they double dip)

I think so too, but WR in the first and Tampa or Khyree in the second wouldn’t shock me either (or LB or S if they like either that early) — there’s been a lot more smoke for them around Worthy/AD/BTJ than I’ve seen around personnel at Bama or Toledo pro days, etc

Jaguars select T’Vondre Sweat, NT, Texas. Ready for a Randall-post?

Is nose tackle a relatively easy position to replace? Yeah, outstanding space eaters get drafted rounds 3-5 all the time. Is he going to have Haloti Ngata-esque sack production at the position, no. Did Sweat test extremely well, also no. He did was prove he’s not too sluggish to play at the NFL level, his times were acceptable at 366 pounds. But no one is drafting Sweat to get upfield quickly.

I could point to his 45 tackles and 8 for loss in 13 games, but most people don’t realize how insane that is for a guy whose whole job is to attract extra blockers. So I honestly just beseech you to watch the tape. Watch how much Texas DL, Byron Murphy II included, got sacks because Sweat blew the entire pocket up first. He doesn’t just stone wall blocks - he actively moves them around and gets past them seemingly at will, and that adds so much to the defense.

Sweat is highly disruptive, with great length. Baalke loves that 81.5” wingspan… paired with Arik Armstead, Travon Walker, & Roy Robertson Harris, few interior linemen will have an advantage there over us. Sweat uses his length well - he has a consistent over arm swim move and a club move that easily disposes of the first guy who wants some; he can hold the other blocker back like holding a door for an old lady; and he is also an EXPERT at batting down passes, seeming to time it right very often.

As far as controlling his run gap… well, you might as well run around the fuckin guy cause you ain’t doing shit to disrupt him from closing in. He might not get the exciting sacks, but what he does is literally bulldoze people into the path of the ballcarrier, pour cement where the QB / RB thought there was a hole and force them to run back into somebody else. He’s elite at that. You need a great nose tackle to turn more good playcalls into more third and fourth downs, an offense can only operate well if the ball carrier has space to work.

And likewise, you need a great nose tackle to help the rest of the defense secure the hunt. Our biggest two problems in our front seven were:
-No interior rush = the QB always had escape routes, Allen and Walker had to work HARD for sacks bc no one else was helping. Top EDGE tandem in sacks… bottom five TEAM in sacks. So you put Sweat in there to eat two blocks and rotate Walker and Armstead so one of those behemoths always has a one-on-one. All of a sudden stunts and blitzes work better.

-poor interior gap control = the linebackers were zig zagging all over the place trying to overcompensate for run gaps. They won’t have to overthink and hesitate so much in pass coverage when they have Sweat in there shutting down A gap runs and allowing them to spread out when the ball is snapped.

Putting Sweat and Armstead in there is the FlexSeal for that pipe leak that flooded us last year.

Davon Hamilton is a fine 4-3 nose tackle but he wasn’t the same after injury last year and he doesn’t give us reliable 3-4 versatility. True double teams swallow him. Having 3-4 base with RRH / Sweat / Armstead but doing our 4-man sub packages with Allen / Armstead / Hamilton / Walker sounds like a winning combination to always have fresh guys on the LOS. I feel pretty confident within 2 years Sweat could replace Hamilton entirely in both packages, saving the team some cap money on the line.

  22. Cincinnati Bengals select Jordan Morgan, OL, Arizona

I wasn't planning on doubling up on OL but the value has been too good to ignore both times so fuck it, protect 9.
