Lines up with what I was saying. His buildup speed kinda slow for a guy that ran 4.3. But that means his long speed is absolutely exceptional. Add in his size, vert, strong hands, good sideline footwork, and arm length? Once he gets a step on somebody that rep is over, CB is not disrupting a well placed pass

My pro comp for BTJ is Martavis Bryant, hopefully without the drug suspensions. We’ve seen 6’4” fast guys not be that good before (MVS, Claypool) but he plays with way more intention and physicality than those dudes. He’s not a full route tree WR1, so let’s not get carried away and call him baby Moss, Moss had suddenness and could run difficult short routes and return kicks. Thomas will likely be more of a one trick pony his first 2 years in the league - either going deep or running a hitch/drag - and if he gets too much defensive attention NFL teams are capable of taking away what he’s good at. But he is a great deep threat and can certainly end up being a well above average, 1000-yard WR2 who can make a whole living off 9 routes, deep digs, and posts as long as another WR is there to take the pressure off.

 

I’d love Brian Thomas if we got Ridley back, he’s the perfect complement to take safety attention off Ridley and he’d be the guy we throw contested jump balls to in the red zone. He doesn’t have to be a WR1 and develop a full route tree right away if we have Ridley. We’d put teams in a real bad spot having to choose between taking away Ridley’s elite route running / footwork in the short and medium range, versus taking away Brian Thomas’s blazing speed and size downfield. Both are an entirely different nightmare to try to match up with one on one and both can eat up a lot of yards in one drive if the coverage gets lazy.

but if we don’t get Ridley back, I’m aiming for a guy who is a more complete route runner like Adonai Mitchell or a better raw jump ball & YAC threat like Xavier Legette to make Trevor’s job easier

fortunately both BTJ and Mitchell are excellent run blockers for the WR position so Baalke will like them
