    The rivalry is back on

Carolina has/had Brian Burns, Derrick Brown, Frankie Luvu, Jaycee Horn, etc; had a solid OL on paper that looked poised to take a step forward; also drafted a WR for Bryce early; etc

you can nitpick after the fact about how Houston was better constructed in certain areas, but at the end of the day, the coach/QB in Houston were good and everyone around them was elevated and the coach/QB in Carolina were bad and a bunch of players regressed around them, and that’s the single biggest difference between those teams in 2022/23 vs 2023/24. It’s not a roster readiness difference

If you think Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels is a DUDE and you dont draft them because you dont believe the team you have around them is ready thats a YOU problem

And I highly doubt the Pats are thinking that way, I just find the revisionism so annoying

They had a decent enough OL but I wouldn't call it good. Also drafting a WR alone means nothing when that receiver is Jonathan Mingo.

There's part of that you're leaving out though that is a huge factor - if you also believe in JJ and/or Nix are franchise QBs.

partially fair, but if you (the pats) believe that wouldnt you think other teams believe that as well? i guess thats where the cat and mouse game comes in on if you want to trade down, how far are you willing to drop and are you willing to risk missing the guy you want?

I'm assuming they don't drop below Atlanta. So that would require 5 QBs in the top 7, at which point if you can't trade down again you walk away with one of Nabers, Alt, or MHJ but I would be shocked if 5 went that early

IMO you pick JJ or Nix at 3 if you think either is a franchise QB

I don’t see a scenario where anyone is sitting at the 3 spot in the draft and is thinking “man, there’s so many franchise QB options sitting here that I’m going to trade down and have no risk of missing my guy to add a 2025 1 or whatever”

Only if it's OR. If it's AND? 100% trade down every time. If you're at 3 with that roster and think there are 3 franchise guys, trade down to 6 or 8 and take the guy you were comfortable taking at 3 but now you also have significantly more capital to build around them. But yeah if you're at 3 and think ONLY Jayden or JJ or Nix is a franchise QB then absolutely take him.

Like sure, if you have two of those guys similarly graded and you play your hand really well and get Arizona or LAC to trade up to 3 to get MHJ and are guaranteed one of the 2 with the pick, fine, good work

but in reality, someone is probably coming up to 3 to take one of the QBs and that’s a lot of risk to take on to actually miss that guy

To me, the only chance they trade down is if they don't love the remaining QBs. If you have 6 QBS graded worthy of a top-10 pick, your scouts suck and you're making a mistake lol

And I think @whitenblue88 said it best when he said "they already did "the drop-off isn't that bad" strategy with Mac and it was a disaster"

It's entirely possible to have a first-round grade on five QBs.

And they were right! The problem was thinking those QBs would be good, not that their difference in talent wasn't that huge.

If I'm the Patriots and I have multiple QBs with a first-round grade, I'm taking the best one of them at 3 and not getting cute

I so just morally and religiously oppose this at this point. I don't want a "first-round grade."

You have the #3 pick, come away with a top-10 grade option at QB and figure out the rest later. I have no time nor patience to deal with fucking Bo Nix because "yippee we got a guard too!" lol

Right. Patriots fans will not give a shit if they come away from the fifth QB drafted who ends up being, like, the 20th best QB in the league but at least they got a good linebacker too! Meanwhile, QBs they could have drafted are playing better and it's just a recipe for a laughable disaster

Any QB worth taking in the first is also worth taking top ten.

I love how we pivoted from me being wrong for saying the Steelers will pick too low to get a good QB to now it's impossible to find a good QB outside of the top three.

The situations are very different, but okay

The situation wasn't the point of contention though it was the draft spot.

I agree in almost every other draft position but I don’t have the stomach to both trade down and take QB with a premium pick — the downside is too high of actually missing one of the guys you want

either I’m taking QB early and I’m trusting my eval of the best QB remaining on the board (with minor caveat above if you can truly trade down 1-2 spots while also guaranteeing yourself a player you’re truly indifferent on) or I’ve decided I’m not taking a QB in the top 10 and I’m leaning into the trade down or BPA
