If X doesn’t have those things then it’s pure skillset that’s exciting teams about him, whereas with BTJ there’s even more “projection”

 

I agree. I'm not out on him. I like him! I'm just not going to pretend the massive red flags don't exist either.

 

The price on Brian Thomas Jr feels steep if he goes top 17-18 with that play style when compared to the likes of MVS, Chark, etc.

However, I can't lie if I was team like Cincinatti, Dallas, Buffalo, Colts etc. it would be a really fun move if he landed with them. Teams with either already a really WR or top QB might be a solid match. I would say the Jags too but I feel like there is overlap with Gabe Davis

 

Teams were excited to take Quentin Johnston and Jonathan Mingo last year. Big man go woosh (which also applies to BTJ, again I don't view him as a top-20 guy) is irresistible to for some NFL guys.

I’m not pretending the red flags don’t exist about X. I’m also not pretending they don’t exist about BTJ. And I think philosophically we’ve reached a point where all the arguments about age, production, and measurements don’t hold up as strong to me if I don’t see a complete skillset on tape. I could very well be wrong, I mean, this is why I might end up being wrong about Anthony Richardson but it’s not always one or the other.

I just wouldn’t wanna take that kinda player in the first round. And I wouldn’t wanna sign that player for $13M AAV in free agency either lmao. Historically we’ve seen that Charks and MVS’s can easily cost less in the draft and cost less on the market if you’re shrewd about finding them and don’t just be simple about falling in love with “big guy go whoosh” or “omg LSU receiver with 17 touchdowns”

 

I cannot emphasize enough how much better Gabe Davis is than both Chark and MVS god dammit

 

IF you’re taking that kind of player gimme Legette. But overall I’d much prefer to land Adonai or Ladd or even possibly Worthy if lack of size isn’t an existing problem in your WR room

 

Yes. If we're taking a WR in round one and not trading up then trade down and go AD or Ladd.

Davis has never put on tape the kinda skills Chark did in 2019. Davis IS better than MVS but not by that much that I wouldn’t rather have MVS for cheap than Davis for a midrange contract

Personally before the Texans traded out I was hoping they'd target BTJ.. Tall, athletic, produced in the SEC, 17 tuddies, 21 years old... give me that all day.

 

That's fine, it's 2024 not 2019.

MVS, with the best QB in football and one of the best of all time, on a team BEGGING for wide receiver production, had 315 yards in 16 games. Davis has scored almost the same amount of times in 2 years than MVS has in his entire career.

 

Yeah I like BTJ more than Randall does but I absolutely see the concerns.

DK and Christian Watson are obviously solid comps who have succeeded (when healthy considering Watson) but neither were a 1st round pick, nvm top 20.

 

And I know it's not sexy but run blocking for receivers is still very valuable and there aren't a whole lot of WRs better than Gabe Davis at it.

 

Okay but in fairness, DK not being a 1st round pick isn't justification to not do it again, it's proof sometimes GMs are stoopid haha

DK was one of the most wild evaluations for me when I did that historic data thing. He was up there with Anthony Richardson and Josh Allen in the "okay so they have two speeds - the GOAT and borderline undraftable" tier.
