I genuinely think BTJ is extremely overrated based entirely on his production / numbers. Dude runs like 3 routes, has limited agility / wiggle with the ball in his hands, drops too many passes etc. with Legette I could at least see him not running in straight lines all game once he’s developed. I don’t see BTJ veering from that role. Skillset wise he’s a less acrobatic DJ Chark.

 

I’ll take a 6’3” WR with a solid frame who runs a 4.33 40 and just caught 17 TDs for one of the premier college football programs and figure the rest out later, please and thank you

 

His skillset screams “way better college player than NFL player” to me

 

LSU’s offense was very simple -

either one of Nabers / BTJ is gonna win on the outside cause of their elite explosiveness, or Daniels is gonna take off and run because those calls still force the defenders to spread out from the middle of the field, and Nabers / BTJ running deep clears out half the run support

there’s a reason why Daniels only threw like 10% of passes to the middle of the field. And that’s a brilliant strategy in college where most teams simply don’t have the athleticism on defense to guard both Nabers and BTJ’s speed but still get to Daniels when he runs up the middle.

It’s not that simple in the NFL though. That role is not getting you 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns unless you also go over the middle of the field regularly which Legette did but BTJ doesn’t. Nabers ran more routes in the same offense and was often targeted on the hash so I don’t have the same concerns as I do with BTJ who’s entire job was like, either run a streak or a hitch

Also I wonder if Thomas Jr's route tree was a matter of scheme over ability? And for a guy who just started playing the sport only a few years ago and is super young, I wonder if he can develop more to his game with NFL coaching?

I did watch to see if he had the lateral agility to become a good route runner and I don’t think he does. He’s fast but not agile or sudden

Part of a vertical route tree. A curl is basically trying to take advantage of defenses into giving him too much cushion after he just ran 3 straight verticals. He was hardly even targeted on slants and they were mostly used to clear out defenders from other parts of the field

 

Sammy Watkins is one of the best YAC prospects to ever play the sport.

I agree BTJ is overrated and should not be seen as a top 20 guy. I do not agree that he is somehow worse than guys with lesser athleticism and similar technique concerns because at the end of the day he still produced where those guys did not.

 

Please argue with more ferocity for a bit, my Helix is not done updating and I need to kill time

 

BTJ did some things with pop passes that make me believe he can be a problem if given the opportunity to catch passes in space (smokes/bubbles).

I don't have him rated that highly but Kansas City and Buffalo should do what they can to land him if Mitchell is off the board.

 

Give Legette Jayden Daniels and he would’ve produced too. He still produced with Spencer mf Rattler, a QB who actively ruined his own draft hype by playing bad lol. And unlike BTJ, Legette actually does have suddenness and agility, you see it on his YAC reps.

I do think he has the type of athleticism that can be coached into better route running and I also just think he’s even better at the physical jump balls thing AND ran across the field / made rough catches over the middle more often.
