I think the slide is late and dirty (albeit seemingly legal since he’s touching the bag (unless the rules have changed or I’m misremembering)) but every time I rewatch the clip, I’m struck by McNeil’s internal clock in not getting out of the way

middle infielders so often catch while coming across the bag (toward the direction of the third baseman), then throw; let the ball travel through the bag, step off backward/towards right field and throw; or catch, step off towards left field and throw

why McNeil caught and dwaddled is beyond me, though he almost certainly didn’t expect Hoskins to go in hard

and if middle infielders aren’t expecting break up slides at second base anymore because times have changed, then maybe they should be totally banned but where is the line drawn of when it’s okay to slide and when the runner should just vacate the base path
