48/52 (92.3% success rate) is absurd

since expansion (1961), if the season ended today, it would be the third best success rate given a minimum of 47 steals (using yesterday’s data bc b-ref hasn’t updated yet obvs)

I get there’s some qualifiers there and I picked expansion just because, but he really has become so effective at stealing bases when earlier in his career he was somewhat wasteful

and I haven’t watched all of Ohtani’s stolen bases so maybe he is abusing the new pickoff limit rule but I sort of doubt it. He’s always been fast, accelerates quickly, wouldn’t shock me that he’s simply gotten better at picking better moments to steal, getting better reads on pitchers, etc

just a really good athlete I think
