essentially a way to distill how valuable a player is, higher the war = better player

so if you look at career leaderboards, you'll see Bonds, Ruth, Aaron, Mantle, Mays, etc etc etc

war stands for wins above replacement, basically how many wins does this player give you compared to replacing them with a player from the minor leagues (like a player from AAA, not some stud prospect)

a very good season is 8+ war, all star is like 5+ war, 2+ is considered average

if you look at 2011-present day, Mike Trout is head and shoulders above everyone, which should make sense to you as a M's fan who has been personally victimized by Trout
