The Best Video Games of 2024

Video game lists tend to coalesce around a chosen few even more than film does, but Slant always highlights a bunch of stuff I had never heard of.

I saw the current frontrunner for worst of the year yesterday. It is almost always a film that gets a ton of awards attention but virtually no accolades from critics.

I’m honestly not sure I’ve even seen 10 films from 2024 at this point. So I guess my I’ll just have to try and rank the six or seven I have.

Generally the best list every year for catching up on the important stuff. I am surprised I have already seen half.

When does reverse shots list come out?

Reverse Shot is usually not until a week or so into January.

All We Imagine as Light seems to be the consensus film of the year and it isn't playing anywhere close. Maybe I will book a hotel room and go down to South Florida for two or three nights to try and see everything playing down there.

Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World is an interesting pick. It is very good but when I saw it months ago I didn't think it was as good as Jude's other films. It is the best movie Uwe Boll has ever been associated with, though. The Beast was very good but also a bit of a surprise.

Last Summer was something I found out by accident was playing about an hour away from where I was staying on a trip, and being a longtime Breillat fan I made the journey and thought it was an excellent return to form. She is the one of the bravest directors of the modern era at examining the darker sides of our sexuality and desire.

Evil Does Not Exist is still the thing I am proselytizing for. Hamaguchi needs to start seriously being considered as the top-tier of current working directors.

There aren't a lot of big-name directors getting the accolades this year. I haven't seen enough to know if it is a tidal wave of new young talent or just a weak year, but it is exciting to see so many new names out there.

There’s a non-zero percent chance Rap World is my favorite film of the year, and I wish it was getting a little more representation in lists, but I get it.

a bunch I still need to catch up on though

I thought Here was supposed to be terrible?

I am glad they included Furiosa. Dune 2 is fine but if there is going to be one big action film it isn't close.

It's close but I'd take Dune.

I've been making a list of stuff from here to check out. I didn't know there was a new Catherine Breillat film so that was a pleasant surprise. I'm currently half way through Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In and it's really great so far.

It seems like a lot of big films won't be out here until January sadly.

Maybe I just have bad taste, but I don't believe Lisa Frankenstein should be anywhere near a worst of the year list. Thought it was very campy fun. Same with Rumours, I wish I liked it more, but I don't think it was WORST of the year?

I didn't see Lisa Frankenstein, but I would imagine part of the reason it is there is because it came out in February. Films that come out in January-March are usually being dumped there because the studio thinks they are going to bomb. It isn't 100 percent, though, but it was why something like Zodiac in 2007 was not taken seriously.

I know it’s low-hanging fruit, but if a Worst Of list doesn’t have the second “Rebel Moon,” it’s not worth reading. Also, that A24 Brandy movie where shit goes everywhere.

I saw a clip for that Rebel Moon movie and it's literally just Star Wars without the name? They had lightsabers.
