i guarantee that whichever team lands Marner, they will immediately be better and likely will become a playoff contender almost overnight. idgaf about the money aspect- teams like Detroit or LA, for example, could really benefit from a guy with that much talent.

i hope he leaves Toronto and goes to a fringe playoff team so i could see how accurate my feelings are here.

i think each player of the core 4 are incredible and personally feel as though Toronto over invested in them too early and never really built the level of depth around them that you’d hope for. i think they could also benefit from potentially taking Marner’s money and spreading it across their roster a bit more.

Yeah this is largely in part because greed is a defining characteristic of the three amigos. Not one of them left a penny on the table in any of the negotiations they've been involved in, and every one of them was/is overpaid relative to their comparables (whether that be in AAV or term). One could argue Dubas should've handled them differently, but I'm not convinced there's much he could've done to achieve a notably different outcome. Nylander for example didn't get signed until literally 5 minutes before the RFA deadline in December 2018, still ended up overpaid, and as a consequence of missing 3 months of hockey, went on to have a terrible season.

And, as I've lamented before, the sentiment around them would be different if a even a single one of them consistently showed up when it mattered. It's not as though they're carrying the team on their backs in the playoffs and being let down by the supporting cast - it's them letting everyone else down.

tl;dr we can't afford depth because of them, and they rarely, if ever, perform well enough to compensate for that lack of depth.

Wouldn’t mind Marner on the Ducks. I’ll worry about his playoff performance when they actually make the playoffs for the first time in 8 years.

The tl;dr portion really does sum up the Leafs experience. Florida had much more offensive depth than Toronto has, and Toronto had no answer for the Marchand / Lundell / Luostarinen line. The headlines will continue to slander the big 3 in Toronto, but they're all pretty much PPG for the entirety of the playoffs. Sure, they struggled against Florida, but this is why depth is just so important and also why the Leafs continue to struggle every year. Florida has 8 forwards with at least 8 points in the playoffs this year while the Leafs ended with 4. Stat lines for the overall playoffs aren't going to always tell the whole story, but it very clearly suggests that the Leafs bottom 6 forwards contributed almost zero offense for them.

I don't blame greed for this - I think guys should be paid for their contributions and it's up to the management team to address the flaws on a given roster. The Leafs chose to give out the contracts they gave and refused to make changes to the core when it was clear they continued to lose early in the playoffs. It isn't easy to trade away core players, and in some cases the player may say "no" to a potential deal (didn't Marner veto a trade around the deadline this year?) but I think Florida and Calgary proved it was possible to make deals swapping upper tier level players, and even if you "lose" a trade like that, you could potentially find a team that has cap space to work with so you can clear out cap to bring in other guys later on.

Now, Toronto faces an interesting scenario where it still isn't working and Marner + Tavares are both going to be unrestricted free agents. On the one hand, it could be devastating for them, but it also is the first time in a long time they have had enough cap space to really make major changes to the roster. I would have loved for them to be smarter about spacing out these deals so that they didn't risk losing both guys in the same offseason, but it's going to be interesting to see how they navigate it.

They're a PPG primarily due to their numbers against Ottawa. Marner had 5 points against Florida, Matthews 4, and Willy had 6 in the first 3 games, then 0 in the next 4. More depth would be nice, but those 3 were and always have been a problem.

And again, part of the reason our depth is lacking is the "big" 3. Treliving being a bad GM as well doesn't help, but still.

Indeed they should, but in Toronto's case, they decidedly were not. To the point where, reportedly, there was some concern that they might reset the RFA market in a year with a couple very noteworthy players up for new deals, and then hilariously, they didn't, because the other big time RFAs were more reasonable about their contract demands. Off the top of my head, in 2019 Brayden Point got a 6.75M bridge deal coming off a 41-goal, 92-point season, and Mikko Rantanen signed for 8 years at 9.25 coming off an 87 point year (with 84 the year prior) - both with arguably more impressive post-season numbers as well. Marner's 10.9M for 6 was a joke.

They were (over)paid based on the players they were projected to be, not the players they were at the time.

And allegedly, Dubas wanted to break up the core a couple years back and ownership wouldn't let him, so he walked. But yeah, ideally, they'd have re-balanced the roster with a trade, but it legitimately might never have been an option.

I watched most of the first period and saw that Bob was basically a fuckin’ wall tonight and yet was still surprised and said “oh shit!” in surprise at the final score when I looked at it while grocery shopping lol

feels like the Core Four have been together for three decades

I could see Seattle going after Marner and giving him what he wants or close to it. Idk offhand how they make the space but I could see them trying to get it done to spark/keep interest. Playoffs once in 4 years is of course not what anyone wants and offensive firepower has always been lacking and Marner would at least provide that

Clearly he only said this to make sure he takes all the heat from this loss, thereby sparing his teammates who he swore a sacred oath to protect.

A+++ captain material, would definitely give $13.25M again.

I believe it's: start at the 0 line and then you use the colors to tell if their individual offensive/defensive performance was good and if the team's offense/defense was better or worse with that player on the ice (alongside PP and PK performance) but that's probably oversimplified
