I honestly wouldn’t be too upset about Dallas winning but that would be five out of the six past years where no state tax teams have won and I hate the political and competitive implications of that

 

Supposedly this will be a big talking point of the next cba. I’ll believe it when I see it.

 

Does this impact any other sports and where people decide to go play? That would be kind of a weird thing to harp on for the CBA discussions, but I honestly haven't paid attention.

I mean probably but given that the NHL is the poorest of the four major sports the impact is more here. You have original six teams in traditional markets who supply most of the revenue sharing to teams in non-traditional markets while star players are also flocking to non-traditional markets and winning championships/going deeper into the playoffs. So I can see why some owners will complain about the current contract setup where a player can pay up to 54% in taxes in NYC and around 33% in Florida or Texas. Less good players means less playoff runs which means less revenue.

The most interesting person in this is bettman - he is the puppet for the owners, you have your powerhouse owners like Jim Dolan in NY and Jeremy Jacobs in BOS who are probably sick of players not wanting to play for them while Vinny Viola just chills and gets players falling into his lap, despite relatively poor ticket sales. Does Gary side with the small markets or the big boys. Given his obsession with hockey in the desert, I think he sides with the non traditional markets. If Tampa Florida and Carolina win cups, that makes it easier for the NHL to expand to Atlanta and Houston, which means big expansion fees for all.
