Rantanen to Dallas deal is off

 

This whole Rantanen deal is truly hilarious. Cannot believe Carolina traded for him without an extension in place.

 

It’s really important to remember that Necas only has one extra year and was 100% going to walk next summer. I’m comfortable with them making the call regardless of how this plays out.

I mean if they get Stankoven and another asset for him from Dallas, okay that's a nice return, but it's just a weird situation overall.

 

Stankoven as the biggest piece isn't enough imo. I think it should be Johnston.

I still think that unless Rantanen tells the Canes he isn't going to sign an extension with them no matter what, you stick with him for a run at the cup. Even if he ends up just a rental for this year, sure that sucks, but at least you have tons of cap space to work with in the offseason

For an extended Rantanen, he’s the only guy i’m taking back. Stankoven doesn’t do anything for this roster, I’d rather keep Rantanen as a rental. Only other option I see is if they flip a package somewhere else for a 2C option that hasn’t been rumored to be available.

 

The way that Carolina has handled this whole thing has been fairly confusing. Getting Johnston+ for an extended Rantanen is the only way I would see that trade turning out ok for them

This is why Colorado traded him to begin with. Sounds like he is wanting to become the highest paid winger in the game which not sure he is worth. Now he might lose that 8th year as well by going to the market and trying to get the highest AAV he can.

I don’t think anyone is going to pay what Rantanen wants right now. At this point I’d be kinda surprised if he gets traded today

I'm not sure there is a winger in the league that is worth that

 

Crazy to me he would turn down 8/12-12.5m to get offered 7/13-13.5 but hey, bet on yourself I guess.
