yeah let me clarify, just because collecting the statistic IS an exact science doesn’t mean drawing prescriptive conclusions from it is an exact science

sometimes statistics are merely “descriptive” rather than “prescriptive” and can illustrate very basic things but their meaning or magnitude/scope isn’t consistent across all contexts, and can’t predict how something will behave in other contexts or in the future

 

My pushback is that you need to be on the field and actually be targeted though, which YPRR doesn’t measure. How many times is a player actually getting open, but just isn’t getting targeted. That stuff matters, but isn’t reflected well in a stat like YPRR, as well as when a WR comes off the field for an extra TE or a FB.

It’s not as simple as “Well, here’s his receiving yards divided by how many routes he ran.” There are still a lot of factors that go into how that player accrues their production, including if they’re even on the field.

 

There’s also just thresholds. Sometimes a number has to be really high or really low to say anything specific and everything in between is kinda nebulous and context dependent

very simple example: only elite QBs throw for 5000 yards in a season, only very bad ones struggle to top 3000, but everything in between is a big jumbled mix of QBS ranging from near-elite to hardly even mediocre

like, if two seconds (one this year and one next year) and maybe a fifth round pick or something somewhere woulda got me Nabers or Odunze then fuck depth lmao gimme
