Plot twist: running a lot of hitches and drags affects this probably almost as much as being a good route runner does, the whole point of those routes are to put stress on zone coverage to make tackles underneath when the point of most zone is to sit back where they can watch the QB and prevent big plays

Also if you ran a lot of verticals against CBs that fell asleep that’ll do that too lol.

A couple big plays where you got behind the safety can make significant change in both yards per route run and QB rating, even if you’re not good against zone overall those couple big plays can skew it really hard.

and that’s what I think happened with Brian Thomas Jr - which still makes a good point about him, which is that teams aren’t entirely safe calling Cover 2 against him cause he will consistently make the safety pay if he doesn’t get deep enough; but for that to happen in Cover 3, Cover 4, Cover 6 etc is far less likely in the NFL than it is for a WR2 in college who has WR1 speed, & I’m not sure how much it says about his route running overall.

 

Both YPRR and QB rating when targeted have so much to do with how that WR was used that it’s hard to take away the same conclusions for some WRs as you would take away from others. Those stats aren’t meaningless, they can make a good point, but you need context to know what those stats are actually saying.

Much like you can’t judge the best shooters in the NBA simply by comparing field goal percentage, unless you’re explicitly comparing guys who take a similar amount of difficult shots because of their role on the team.

Right. I don’t think it’s a nothing stat, but it doesn’t move the needle for me by itself. I’ve read articles and listened to podcasts from Matt Harmon and Hayden Winks who have pointed out that target competition, among other things, play a role in a receiver’s YPRR than necessarily their individual ability does

 

Yesss I love it when football analysts are properly critical of stats and whether they always mean what their name leads you to think they mean

sports statistics is such an inexact science, I really feel like baseball is the only sport where what the advanced stats tell you is exactly what’s happening most of the time

Sorry, just feel the need to say that YPRR is a pretty exact science since it is receiving yards (which is well tracked) divided by routes run (which is also well tracked)

I get that you’re saying the stupid quadrant thing using YPRR isn’t an exact science at telling you who is good and bad at receiver and agree

 

Vibes are good with Trev because he’s about to get a fat paycheck and they got him a cheap WR lol.
