You know what I decided is really dumb today? Trigonometry.

I’m a math person who took data science classes, is critical of misleading statistics and bad research methodology, and applies calculus concepts to real life patterns… but I ain’t never used a single goddamn thing I learned in trig lol. They’re really teaching 15-16 year olds that stuff? I am 34 and I still don’t really understand what trig does or why anyone who isn’t an engineer or astronomer etc needs to know it lol

imagine how much further along we’d be in society if kids learned about like, car & household maintenance or something like that instead

Actually question of the day, what’s your number one thing they don’t teach in high school that you think society would be better if they did

How to lie on a resume

GREAT answer. Especially gotta teach the autistic kids why lying is actually important in society and how to do it with subtlety in specific contexts where it’s useful for everybody (like resumes) without being too immoral lol

  11. In high school we had tech prep and college prep tracks. Tech prep was for people that wanted to go into the trades. Would have been cool if people on college prep would have had some tech prep options like some electrical or plumbing or other construction stuff.

They should teach kids more about personal finance, taking out loans, buying a car/house, investing your money, 401k, retirement etc.

I get why math people think most high level math is useless

As a math person, I have actually found a lot of ways that calculus, statistics and behavioral science theories that apply both calculus and statistics are useful in daily life. I have found 0 ways trigonometry is useful for someone who isn’t literally designing (or reverse engineering) something that REQUIRES high level science

I did just discover that it’s important in forensic science because you often use ballistics to determine how somebody got hurt or killed and understanding mathematical relationships between angles could help that. But that’s still so inapplicable to things the vast majority of people do in their lives. I just don’t get why trig isn’t a hyper specialized college course rather than a mandatory math for every high schooler

For what it's worth trigonometry at my school was a very short course in a calculus class and not something that was an entire class

When I was working in estimating I used a lot of HS math

I don't use it now really but yeah it was helpful for a while

They actually do this in Britain, it’s how their grade school is structured. They finish the level of school that is equivalent to our high school very early like 15-16 years old, and then they go to a sort of, between college and high school trade program between 16-18. There they can either decide to continue with academia and prepare for university (in which case this step in their education is equivalent to the first two years of college in the US), or they can choose to pursue a trade and learn employable non-academic skills right then and there.

The best part? Kids literally earn a stipend for attending! They don’t pay for this, the UK government actually invests in their young generation being employable and gives kids an incentive to be invested in their futures!! IMAGINE THAT (of course though, when they go to university then it’s the same and it costs very high tuition with the promise of a career that can pay it off)

I’ve told y’all I started writing music seriously when I met a British friend online who already knew how to record music at 16 years old… this is the reason why. He studied music engineering, production, song construction, advanced music theory etc during this trade program while he was still a teenager. Between that being built into his education program, and the fact that the UK has a strong welfare program, over the years I watched him methodically become a professional musician who actually does it for a living, because he had these resources at his disposal and didn’t have to work two restaurant jobs and spend thousands in recording studios to launch his career.

    BIG, big difference.

  25. Whenever I say I’m an accountant people are like “woah you must be good at math” but it’s all basic addition and subtraction and excel, a calculator, or a software does all the work lol
