I do wanna talk about the idea of distancing yourself from football and your relationship from it though. I get that it's easy to be like "just let go and have fun with it" and for some people it is easy. Other people might have addictive personalities as a whole, or have traits that result in hyper-focusing on interests (not going to diagnose autism for people but people can certainly have the specific characteristic) and those things really might result in needing to take a break or quit paying attention to it altogether. It is different for everyone and I'm not criticizing anyone who it's easy for of course for maybe not understanding or for understating it, just moreso trying to add that perspective of someone who both tunnel visions on interests AND has an extremely addictive personality.

 

Sitting through the Patricia years made me genuinely hate football and I had to detach myself from that because my god lions games during that era were the worst I’ve ever witnessed. At least with Schwartz and Caldwell there was still potential. Patricia nearly sucked all joy out of the sport for me.

honestly even if this team still doesn’t win a SB, Dan Campbell at least made me enjoy football again

I just wanted to be clear that it’s not just the Jags sucking that makes me annoyed with football, it’s how my way of compensating for the Jags sucking is to talk strategy and when I’m doing this it breeds conflict.

Even when it’s about other teams that are actually good, even in an NFL thread where we’re all doing the same thing… it’s not perceived as the like, creative, stimulating, playfully competitive exercise of trying to learn and consider as much of the detail of this sport as you can without being a real expert… I would love if it was like that and we were just like “that’s a good point but here’s MY take on the strategy”.

But there’s this extra layer of, it’s perceived as me being a performative bullshitter who thinks he’s smarter than everyone - when in reality I think it’s all subjective and I’m Just Posting cause I have a Lot Of Opinions. I genuinely love it when good-mood version of Elf or like whitenblue or Dinkleberg etc actually embraces my actual motives in wanting to discuss it, which is “there’s so much detail to this, no one’s gonna always be right but it’s fun to theorize and hypothesize”

 

I'm not going to respond to this further just because I feel like I have well and because also I don't want to talk over anyone else who may respond and dominate the conversation with you but I wanna say I can't get over you saying Elf, it's so weird. Same if I ever post it, feels wrong

 

I think, and this is just my own thoughts, there would be far more enthusiasm for "strategy talk" or whatever, if it wasn't weighed down by the many many other things the thread has discussed at length. I enjoy when WhitenBlue (yes, it's Whiten Blue, fuck off with your colors) gets into the weeds, and while it makes me worry for Dink, I enjoy when he does it too. So it's not that there isn't space to talk about football.

The issues have been discussed at length so I'm not going to belabor them but they get brought up a lot, and there's a lot of talk about taking accountability or owning things, or changing behaviors but then we always end up right in the same spot.

And I'm not blaming it solely on you for the record, but in this context you're the one wondering why it feels like there's an eyeroll whenever you wanna talk strategy so there's my thoughts.
