the venue is a business. the industry of giving local musicians a platform is a business. Even if you're purely doing this for fun and not trying to "get anywhere" with it you still have to acknowledge the place you're playing at is a struggling small business and they DO need to make a profit

 

There are zero local matinee shows in my city of music that I’m interested in. Again, if doesn’t matter if it’s an all or nothing thing. It is still massively more difficult to go to a show, even if I’m seeing one or two bands compared to getting food or coffee from a local business.

I was illustrating that being a musician who plays live is a business whether you like to look at it that way or not, and if we want it to continue then we genuinely can't be okay with the fact that most local shows have like 18 people at them lol

 

i prefer to think of her having a monastic existence

 

If we're gonna go the venue route, many of the ones I go to now and in the past either diversified (typically with upping their food options or having pool tables, outdoor hang areas etc) or did go out of business if they didnt evolve

Its not on the consumer imo

 

that is why venues are closing and why local music is dwindling, ya know? Think practical here and not just in terms of pathos.

There were some in Houston that also had, like certain events on a Wednesday or other "dead days" to bring in business

A DJ at Walters on Washington would stream on Twitch as well for the business

it's never "on the consumer", I'm not blaming anybody, but the power IS in the consumer's hands to change that paradigm if it's important to them. Not every venue, the way it's designed and the way their clientele is, would succeed as a restaurant with pool tables or whatever cause that's not the point of a venue.
