The catch 22 there is that you usually need 4 bands to have a good shot at at least one of them drawing well. That part falls heavily on the bands though. If every band was as dedicated to promoting as (for example) I am we could do 2 band shows and still draw minimum 30 - up to 150 or 200 people depending on the night and make it totally worthwhile to the venue

but that’s not the reality. I do 70-80% of the legwork to promote almost every show lol. It’s good in terms of my reputation with venues but the music scene as a whole would be in way better shape if bands with a lot less experience than me didn’t just post twice on Instagram and give up, no physical flyers no posters no presales no funny bits on instagram no open mics no nothing

just got home and also wanna say this is all good points but don’t you make all those micro decisions every time you decide to go to anything - for example, movies? And the thing about a local show is you didn’t really miss the whole point of going if you don’t stay the whole time, like is true for a movie. You wanna get out of there by 930 and be in bed by 10 go ahead! You still bought a ticket and the bands still get credit for selling that ticket and the venue can still put that ticket money and whatever beverage you bought toward their staff and overhead costs

maybe you miss the headliner but they’ll be the opener or second band next time or play a matinee afternoon show or some shit, it’s never your only chance to see them & you can still spin their EP on the way home or something

 

Movies also carry a very similar uncertainty - “will I actually like something I’ve only seen 30 second previews of?” “This movie could be 1.5 or 3 hours” etc

But I guess movies have the same struggle - while millions of people love movies, like 0.1% of those are actually seeing indie films and people generally have to know at least 1 or 2 famous actors in the film to be interested
