The funniest part of that episode was like 45 minutes through it my wife, who had headphones in, looks up at Jaime Lee Curtis and just goes "is she okay?"

Yeah, bands that are good all do this and venues are still dying - which is why it’s also imperative that we work to change the perception of local music among those who don’t really go to shows. I find as a band every band is promoting to the same like, 2000 people in their town and there’s just not enough local music supporters in general to go around. The way people who don’t go to shows perceive local shows is so much worse than the reality. In actuality a lot of them are surprisingly good and if they aren’t fuck it, leave after your first beer! No one says you have to stay and you didn’t spend much on the ticket, you’re not locked there until the last band finishes, coming at all and giving it a shot is being supportive

Well I can tell you you have taken an incredible path towards changing my perception. My biggest takeaway from marketing school was “when presented with an objection from a prospect, make sure to tell them it’s stupid and not real.”

 

There was that one year, but no, none of this is my Christmas now. That part of the family hates me now lol

 

imo earlier set times are good for the weekend. on weekdays too many people wont be able to make it on time

 

all of this, yes. The information paralysis angle is very perceptive and true.

 

I agree with this... Finding a band 'in the wild' you come away enjoying is certainly still an enjoyable, possible thing but it's of course far less necessary in this day and age where there's so many ways bands can gain exposure.

Think most like me are in their 30's, it's definitely harder to just go see a show on a whim. I mostly just keep tabs on the venues I like in my area which range from a dive bar club to a full amphitheatre. I'll peruse the schedules occasionally and play some tracks of bands coming through, if I think it's worth checking them out live I'll keep it in mind.

But I can't really see myself blindly going to shows anymore.

I don’t necessarily mean totally blind, I mean like check out what’s playing at the venues and listen to like half a Bandcamp or Spotify song of the bands. It seems daunting at first but the same bands be playing often so eventually you’ll develop some familiarity with the like 3 or 4 local bands you’d actually go see

 

I don’t even have time to listen to random bands anymore. If someone recommends me something they better recommend me the right song for me to bother checking out the rest of their work. Just how it is these days.
