if it’s you I’d say piano, but if it’s him I’d say start with piano cause his little sponge brain will soak up so much info about how music works from the piano

Piano is more easily laid out to mentally understand music theory (every note is exactly in order) but takes much longer to get good at, better for a kid that has flexible fingers, knows nothing about music patterns yet, and has all the time in the world to learn.

If you’re looking to pick up an instrument that would be fun for you and not a huge commitment before you start having fun with it though, and aren’t too worried about theory beyond the basics / stuff you can intuitively hear, guitar is much easier in that sense

Guitar and piano are both considered among the easier instruments, they’re pretty close. Not sure which I’d pick to be easier

 

thanks. For Declan. He’s expressed interest in guitar and likes to mess around on a piano app on the iPad. He also wants to do archery lol.

but he’s doing swimming now and wants to stop. But he needs to pass one more skill to advance out of the level and it’s just not happening (it’s related to the butterfly which is a dumb stroke). I don’t want to tell him it’s okay to quit but at the same time I don’t want to be forcing him to do something that he doesn’t want to and is also not applicable to anything he’ll need. Might try to dangle a carrot of getting him lessons in whatever instrument once he passes the swimming level.

 

Got In-N-Out for the first time in five years since theres one right by my brother's place and i have temporary access to his car.

"learning guitar" is easy, I have to imagine piano is much more difficult

mastering guitar is difficult, although I'm sure that's the same for piano

 

i should have read the thread, i assumed you were asking for yourself. yeah, randall is right, for a kid, you should do piano or violin. basically the hardest shit possible because they'll retain way more of it and it's easier then than it is later on
