Like if the NFL partnered with organizations on what being held accountable for their actions and taking accountability looked like, I wouldn’t roll my eyes so much at “don’t people deserve second chances???”

    Not specifically at Josh btw.

But the league doesn’t. Instead they have a guy who has his 37th sexual assault accusation and the main narrative is “does that mean the browns don’t band to pay him now?”

Agreed on the league’s indifference and enablement - in Hunt’s case specifically he was cut from his team, suspended, and lost significant income, personal and team success. He did a really really awful thing when he was young.

im just not personally as on board as say, Victor, when it comes to saying fuck this guy forever. I grew up seeing domestic violence and substance in my family. It’s ugly and awful and traumatizing. And if you met my dad now you’d have no idea. He’s a nice man that works at a propane company and rides with his Christian motorcycle group every weekend

if we don’t believe in or give people a chance to grow and make amends (publicly or privately) then what’s the point of being a human

    IMO

I’m not sure, I do know of him getting pulled over by like Cleveland police and based on his interaction with the cops he seemed in a pretty rough place

I lucked out and caught the happy ending of a similar story with my dad, so I feel you. But the work my dad had to put in is what I’m looking for before I say “yes you’re allowed to make bank and be a role model to kids again.” Not just a simple time out.

Sure but do we know what all he’s done to make amends? If it were all made public would we not simply write it off as damage control/PR?

and I promise I’m not saying this just as a chiefs fan lol

Not sure how much of a “2nd chance” this is for Hunt after he’s played over 50 NFL games since his suspension. Like I get he’s “returning to the chiefs” and it’s his “2nd chance to play for them” but I hate the phrasing lol

Also in general yes I can forgive someone for making mistakes and holding themselves accountable.

However, there are certain things I definitely cannot forgive and those types of things lean into what Hunt was suspended for. I just can’t forgive or feel bad for someone who’s done those things.

The Watson situation isn’t totally comparable, what that guy has done is evil. But guys like Hunt who have one noted (still very terrible) mistake when they’re young don’t deserve to be totally written off. Even though, what we haven’t seen could be much worse.

my thought is there are certain things that can be forgiven, specifically if you put in the effort to learn from your mistakes and "do good" in that field i.e. charity work

However, there are certain things that just simply cannot be forgiven IMO. Putting your hands on or sexually assaulting a woman is one of those things to me.

Like for example, I always bring up the Vick example. What he did was fucking brutal, especially as a dog owner. However, he went to jail for his crimes and also has seemingly turned his life around. Do I think he is some upstanding citizen? No, but I do think of him in a different light than some of these other guys.

For me too, part of it is I simply couldn’t care less about the potential “lost income” from an NFL player. Some people make stupid mistakes and go to jail or die. So I’m not gonna shed a tear that he was cut from the chiefs and missed a season or two. Being in the NFL is a privilege to me, so I kinda think if you blow it, sucks to suck. That’s just me.

    The rivalry is back on

I’m realistically never going to have a positive or even neutral view of Kareem Hunt as a random dude on the internet who will likely never meet him, but has seen/heard accounts of his attack. I also don’t think that prevents him in any way from having a chance to grow or make amends with those who matter, as I hope he is.

Yeah my viewpoint is that people absolutely deserve second chances to be good contributors to society and that second chance, to me, is not playing in the NFL. Being a NFL player is such a luxury that I feel like a second chance shouldn’t be something that gives you millions of dollars after being so heinous

Also, considering what Justin Blackmon and Josh Gordon had done to their careers in comparison to guys like Watson or Hunt; despite having done so, so much less egregious things, gives the NFL basically not leg to stand on that they;ve ever had a coherent policy.

NFL only cares about second chances if the player is still good. Ray Rice would've stayed in the league if he played better.

Don’t get me wrong, I do believe in one’s ability to rehabilitate their image and make a positive impact in their life and community. In Hunt’s case, I obviously don’t know the guy, but I also don’t know what he’s done to actually rehabilitate his image. I don’t owe him a second chance or anything like that.

that is also a great point.

No one is saying that these guys should never be able to live a life and get another job, but playing in the NFL is priveledge, so if you fuck that up, oh well. Go learn how to sell cars or some shit.
