I remember when it was a big deal that I went to Amsterdam and smoked weed in public.

The weed is actually the least memorable thing about that trip now lmao, US dispensary weed is fuckin STRONG

What I remember most is the beautiful canals, the THOUSANDS of bikes and bike lanes fucking everywhere, never wanting to stay in a hostel again, being the most ill I've ever felt when we were mid-travel from one town to the next, water bottles being like $6 and public bathrooms costing a few dollars too (a motherfucking security guard literally opened the bathroom door on me when I got into one without paying), the Red Light District actually being a nice part of town and not a sketchy ghetto... and the rest of the country actually being pretty fuckin boring outside of Amsterdam lol. Didn't even like Rotterdam, it felt like just industry and buildings with no soul

the architecture, coastal views, and cobblestone streets are actually VERY similar to my neighborhood of Baltimore... Baltimore's oldest areas definitely took influence from the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany

I just remembered a couple other details:
-The weirdest art museum I've ever seen
-boat traffic. Literally, traffic queueing up at intersections of canals.
-the herring stand, my god the fresh herring stand. Easily holds up to the best sushi I've ever had. It was called Frens Haringhandel and they sold raw, sliced, filleted herring that was caught that morning and would close in the afternoon when they ran out. With a sweet pickle and some sweet onions and a small dollop of mustard. That is one of my top 5 breakfasts I've ever had, it's cheap and you can taste the freshness. We got it 3 separate times while we were there.
-actual Belgian fries from that part of the world are better than any American french fry period... and they all ruin them by putting mayonnaise on them. (the curry ketchup substitute was good though).
-their language is very percussive, it sounds like they're getting interrupted repeatedly by someone smacking them in the mouth mid-sentence
