just because record labels and ticketmaster steal from the bands that everyone in here knows, doesn't mean there aren't more economical ways to manage tour and merch when you play outside of that monopoly. The whole music industry is shifting and its simply not even a good deal anymore to be signed and play at the more "staple" venues. I honestly think it's actually a pretty widespread thing that more DIY tour focused bands are doing a little bit better simply because they're minimizing expenses and only working with venues that dont take merch cuts etc

and look if you're touring 7 months out of the year who cares if you have to pick up some cover gigs and guitar repair gigs when you're back home, that's still doing music full time to me. If i could be on tour half the year and a studio guitarist for hire the other half. yes techincally studio guitarist is my "day job" but thats still doing music full time imo. The goal is to not have to spend 40 hours a week doing something that isn't music just so you can do music in your time off. Touring half the year alone is an indicator of success because no one can afford to just eat the cost of that, if a DIY band is doing that its because they're making money back. a "day job" would not let you take that much time off work.
