The subsequent late 2000s / early 2010s wave of pop punk / emo fucking blows (Metro Station, Boys Like Girls, etc no thank you) and that’s when I lost interest and started getting into rawer punk and more musically diverse indie / alternative bands, they turned the “whiney” and “generic” sides of the genre up to 11 and added some half ass synths and electronics like that makes the music less cringe lol

but the fifth wave from like mid 2010s onward (Modern Baseball, Wonder Years, etc) is pretty solid and arguably better than the early 2000s wave we grew up on. it’s as fun as the old pop punk shit is but nowhere near as gimmicky, whiney, misogynistic

I don’t know that there’s been a sixth wave so much as just a movement where bands are reviving older waves of the genre, and a similar thing kinda happened to indie/ alternative during the pandemic. Probably because labels and bands that have been around along time started doing bad financially when we couldnt go to shows and needed to cash in with nostalgia

Yellowcard is a weird one for me. I dig the instrumentals and from that angle I think they’re one of the best third wave pop punk bands, but most of the lyrics are… woof lol

    most of it does yes

but I grew up in Florida in the early 2000s which was a super hot spot for that style of music, and hung out with skateboarders in junior high and high school, and also knew a lot of like Baptist church kids whose religious pop punk bands would play at Christian venues that didn’t let bands swear or drink lmao (cause that was also a thing after Relient K and Third Eye Blind and Underoath blew up… remember Tooth & Nail records? We had a whole venue Murray Hill Theatre that required the band to be Christians. And it was REALLY POPULAR and would have 100+ teenagers and young adults at shows. Florida lmao)

And then eventually every day I came home from school consisted watching Fuse every day and posting on AP everyday etc etc and learning guitar, which I obviously wasn’t great early on but pop punk was a very easy genre for someone just learning the instrument to get tight on it and comfortable with it.

So, long story short I’m wired to like some of it and need some of that music in my life lol. I think most of us LONGTIME regulars on this website have a similar story.

Origami Angel is maybe my favorite current band that overlaps with pop punk, but they have plenty of other influences too.

downloading dressed to kill off of pure volume or mp3.com was definitely a teenage moment

I’ll listen to pop punk all day, just good stuff and not man overboard

I suppose this is tangentially related to the skate punk rant I was on last week lol. I would consider a lot of that stuff to be the “second wave” of pop-punk in the 90s, (totally separate from second wave emo like Cap’n Jazz and Promise Ring) before third wave pop-punk and third wave emo started having incestuous relations and getting super commercialized in the 00s. Blink 182, Green Day, and MXPX are obviously the biggest bands of that second wave and were obviously also very commercialized but the rest of it was pretty underground aside from THPS videogames and major skate company videos.

I’m bored so I did this, I imagine no one will read it. Here’s my pop punk “era” rankings. Not to be confused with my actual punk / hardcore punk era rankings (though my #1; #3;and #9 era of pop-punk have some overlap with this) or my indie / alternative era rankings, which are totally different umbrellas of bands and totally different family trees of who they’re influenced by.

    General classification:
Personal rankings of how much I like each era

———BIG GAP, now we get into the 60% of pop-punk that I don’t like at all——
