Like I think falling from pick 3 in our mocks to round 2 IRL is pretty big to where it's split between "something is up" and "it's a steal" but even with that split I don't think there's any reason to think calling it a steal and being wrong is an L

(As an aside we DID have Josh Allen going high but we also weren't believing in the Kyler rumors for a while so that's certainly a factor in him going that high and I maintain the Jags were in range)

 

If someone DOES trade up to 4 for McCarthy though then dammit get the next 3 teams on the phone immediately.

 

Arizona is quite literally trading down with someone for a QB

 

Those three teams would all be very very stupid to trade down. They pick 5-6-7 and get to take the 2nd, 3rd, and 1st best players in the draft. Atlanta loves Dallas Turner, Chicago wants Olu, and the Jets are apparently obsessed with Fuaga. So really, you are correct in saying we need to trade up with Arizona, but it'll be at 11 in that case

 

Payton Wilson in Houston is something I have nightmares about. please do not.

I still think Allen was shockingly under drafted even WITH Kyler.

I get Kyler, Bosa, Quinnen going ahead of him, but the next three are HILARIOUS - Clelin Ferrell, Devin White, Daniel Jones

Allen had 88 tackles, 17 sacks, 5 fumbles forced, 4 passes defensed, and an interception in 13 games his final year at Kentucky. That is a BONKERS season for a college pass rusher. He was 6’5” and ran a 4.6 flat and did open space linebacker drills and backpedaling drills without any awkwardness or false steps. He was very obviously a stud. probably shoulda went right after Bosa tbh

 

As a prospect Devin White was absolutely telegraphed to go that high though and especially as a fit for Tampa

Ferrell is indefensible though there was no reason to pick him over Allen ever

 

I'm very excited to get to edge rushers in my historic data little bullshit thing I'm doing. I cannot wait to see how big of a fuck up the Raiders made with context.

 

I still think taking any inside linebacker over a pass rusher like that is a hell of a choice considering most of the greatest linebackers of all time were drafted much later whereas pass rusher talent is rare and coveted

 

That Ferrell pick was made fun of at the time

Raiders thought they were the smartest team in the room, really they were the bozo

 

I think the context of just how good Devin White was in college AND his potential as a prospect is being overlooked and it's a lot more complicated than "Tampa made a mistake"

 

the funniest part of that to me was it was the 2nd most correctly guessed pick of the draft. It's just everyone had Ferrell going at like 26 with the Raiders 3rd 1st rounder lol

 

Devin White was really good, I find no qualms with that pick

 

A great inside linebacker is rarer than a great pass rusher. And despite what people may think lately, it's more valuable too.

 

The problem with LBs going high is people keep taking Isaiah Simmons or Zaven Collins or Devin White and yes they're elite athletes but that's not a position I take high with the goal of teaching them the position.

 

In the end the answer is yes with hindsight Allen was drafted later than he would be now out of R1 prospects but at the time I think it was fair to say he was available there

 

Yeah, Tampa definitely didn’t just take a bad player that isn’t worth pick 5 or anything

I suppose I just value measurables more for pass rushers cause it seems to translate to skill more often. Position is more about pushing yourself to physical limits than it is about knowing layers upon layers of game strategy. Feels like the athletic freak is usually at least a “pretty good” pass rusher (with Jadeveon Clowney being a good counterargument but he still had a nice career and got a decent amount of sacks.) Whereas you’ve seen so many “too small, too slow” Ray Lewis guys slip through the cracks and become dominating LBs

Good pass rushers can make bad linebackers look good, and bad pass rushers can force good linebackers to try to do too much and have relatively down seasons. There’s also a lot of pass rushing that you just can’t coach and at the end of the day your guy just has to be a better fighter and more tenacious.

 

And to add to this, I do agree that elite linebackers are “harder to find”. I just would say they also don’t necessarily come early in the draft, because elite measurables is what the draft values most above instincts and production
