How much have you invested in the album vs how much do you think you’ll make off of it? That might be a private question but you e been posting pretty openly about it for a while so I figure it’s fair to ask

Lol well, I got quite the uphill battle to return THAT investment lol

mostly it’s easier to justify being a DIY musician if you say “well I would’ve made that record for me anyway even if I had no interest promoting it and playing it live” - which is true for me - and focus on getting ROI on your tours / shows cause that’s a lot more realistic in the early stages.

You make the album with the realistic hope of “we’ll get better shows with bigger audiences, and open for bigger bands that really liked our sound, and people will want it at the merch table, and we can start asking for guarantees at shows because we appear more professional and established” etc, turning your live shows into a side hustle and not just an investment hole.

You also very unrealistically have the pipe dream hope that the album will actually blow up by way of playlists & media coverage & mass social media shares, as that’s the only way you’re paying yourself back for the recording and the gear, but you should expect to be disappointed if that’s why you made the music. More so you make music cause you love making music and then from there you build PERFORMING music into a profitable enterprise. Most of what the album does is help you generate momentum exponentially faster than when you DIDNT have recent music out. But it still obviously takes some luck and some willingness to invest upfront money into tours out of pocket before you make money back - because if you release an album and don’t do anything with it then you really are just hoping a social media post goes viral. You actually have more control in terms of building your brand in tangible ways, when you’re out playing it live right after you released it.

 

Essentially I’m trying to bring the album TO the kind of people who would put it on a popular playlist or plug it to some real distribution channels or write an article about it, rather than hoping they find and come to me. Everyone of those people wants to be the genius who discovered the next big thing, the hard part is being the band that they saw by chance that inspires them that way. Your chances of that happening are way way bigger if you’re actively touring and staying visible

and even if you do go viral just by the Instagram / TikTok algorithm smiling upon you, you still kinda have to go out and perform to make your music seem more tangible. If people are just streaming you online then your ROI is very minimal, you want people to want your album in physical form (or annother way of supporting you like merch) and to want to come see you. So I don’t even think going viral online helps that much these days if it’s just that by itself and not in conjunction with your band building an IRL reputation. That’s how overnight sensations go on tours way bigger than they are ready for and end up losing money.
