Great example of how limited AI is about understanding context. It can string words together beautifully but often misses the big picture that a human would draw different conclusions from and change their own way of thinking (see: algorithm) as a result. once AI establishes a bias that is wrong everything it “learns” gets reinforced by circular logic from that bias, it astonishingly is just as prone to biases as stubborn humans who don’t like to learn lol

The really ironic part is when AI is trained on already-biased data, it’s actually the human biases to begin with that make AI useless about improving the problem. A big example - crime algorithms. If an AI sees more arrests / crimes happening in a certain area, it is designed to think that area is more dangerous and needs more police attention. However this wildly misses the point that higher numbers of arrests and crimes, are usually associated with police making much harsher and more unfair judgment calls with people of color and poor folks, while being way more lenient with white authority & celebrity figures who actually do bad things - the arrests themselves are biased by classism and racism and not only determined by how bad the crime actually is. So all the AI does is magnify police oppression and make them become even MORE violent and unfair to the same areas they already terrorize, and the worst part is they think they’re justified cause “the numbers in the computer back it up”, but that’s a self fulfilling prophecy any time police wantonly target a black neighborhood for petty offenses.

lol semi-related but tools that try to catch people writing with AI are also actually racist, and disproportionately punish ESL writers.

 

AI has no assumptions of its own, it learns from whatever organization “trained” it. So, in a country where systemic racism exists in essentially all forms of bureaucracy, yes AI can have enormous racist consequences. From police activity to healthcare coverage to biometric science to who gets approved for loans etc etc the list is infinite

 

So no AI is not racist in a vacuum but YES 100% AI will make racism worse in America the more we lean on it to make decisions. That snowball effect is nowhere near as easy to reverse as it is to start.

also also also i actually kind of feel bad about all of that in retrospect. i was just having Fun online (something a lot of users on this website hate to do), and it both ended a1 and i think was a contributing factor in a lot of good users leaving the site forever. bummer
