Let's go to the extreme then. If an era has rendered a position borderline obsolete, do I still have to include the best of that position for that era? For me, WR and RB has a mega tough climb to make the hall these days. I'm not just letting in anyone who had a 3-4 season run of elite play. There's too much of that and it renders the whole thing meaningless.

besides that though, I think the proliferation of spread offenses and committee rushing attacks, while it has led to more offensive production and fewer turnovers overall, has also made it way harder to get individual statistics. I also think defenses have gotten better at taking elite talent out of the game completely if they make that their gameplanning goal. These things factor in for me in terms of how much less likely it is there will ever be a Barry Sanders or a Jerry Rice again. I tend to weigh “how hard were they to stop” more than just numbers themselves cause this is just a much harder league to be consistently productive and targeted. Coaches HAVE to spread the ball around to win
