I’d say the Steelers are good not great. They’re winning and should have won both games they lost. It just doesn’t look pretty. They also haven’t played any great teams. The stretch of the eagles, ravens and chiefs in 10 days is gonna be something.

I'm breaking this up into separate posts, starting with the offense so here's where I'm at with the Eagles' offense so far this season.

Quarterback

I think Jalen Hurts has been playing alright so far this year, but just alright. I thought he was looking pretty rough earlier in the season, prior to the bye week. Some people might want to handwave away his poor play due to missing AJ Brown for three consecutive games and missing DeVonta Smith and Lane Johnson for the Bucs game (and for portions of the Saints game), but the fact of the matter is he played poorly, turning the ball over frequently and putting it in harm’s way just as much. Even in the Packers game, when he had his entire supporting cast around him, he still threw two inexcusable interceptions, had two fumbles, and made other questionable decisions along the way.

With that being said, he has certainly turned his play around since the bye week. He has no turnovers and has looked a bit more decisive as a passer, even when dealing with injuries along the offensive line and to Brown. He still has a nice deep ball and has looked better as a runner this season than he did last season, at least when he’s running downhill on draw plays or while scrambling. He’s willing to give his dudes a chance to make plays down the field, which is far preferable to a check down merchant. The Bengals game was easily his best of the season.

However, it’s worth pointing out the competition he’s facing. While teams obviously can’t control who is on the schedule, it’s fair to point out that some of his best games this season have come against some of the worst teams. Even then, Hurts has taken several sacks (four vs the Giants, three vs the Jags). While some could be explained away by having backups on the OL, poor play-calling, or nobody getting open, Hurts has made some questionable decisions such as holding onto the ball for too long while going through his progressions, missing or turning down open receivers, and/or scrambling into pressure or sacks.

Ultimately, while his play has been trending in a more positive direction since the bye, Hurts has simply been just alright. The problem is, he’s being paid too much money to be “just alright.” I see people throwing stats around of how he’s played lately and, while they paint a pretty picture, the film muddies it up a bit. I can only hope he continues to trend upward though and can return to consistently good play like he has shown in the past.

Running Back

Wide Receiver

AJ Brown is Him. DeVonta Smith is Him. Jahan Dotson is…not. I like Dotson and I thought he was a good player with the Commanders. The film-grinders have noted that Dotson has shown some separation skills, but Hurts has turned him down. I’ve said it before and and I’ll say it again, Hurts has tunnel vision for Brown, Smith, and Dallas Goedert, as does the coaching staff. No, I don’t expect Nick Sirianni and Kellen Moore to draw up specific plays for Dotson, nor did I ever, but I was expecting some more opportunities to go his way. Maybe next year, but hopefully as the season progresses. Suffice to say, the trade looks like a big L against Howie Roseman right now, but I think Hurts and the coaching staff are a larger reason why that’s the case than Dotson himself.

Tight End

Dallas Goedert is an enigma. I believe he has all the tools and skills to be one of the best tight ends in the league. He can separate at all levels of the field, is a threat after the catch, and makes positive contributions as a blocker. Unfortunately, his stats will never reflect those qualities as much as they should because he was stuck behind Zach Ertz for years and now plays second fiddle to Brown and Smith in the passing game. He also has a penchant for missing multiple games a season due to injuries. He should return from his hamstring injury on Sunday and hopefully he can finally unhook the trailer. Grant Calcaterra has filled in nicely during Goedert’s absence. He’s quietly made a big step forward this season. I mean, Hurts has been throwing him the ball!

Offensive Line

This is a tough group to evaluate with all the injuries they’re been dealt along the line so far this season. Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson have both continued to play at a high level, but some have noted that Mailata could take a bit of a step up in pass protection and Lane hasn’t looked as good in run blocking this season, but it feels very nit-picky. They both rule and hopefully Mailata returns from IR soon.

The interior is where I think the Eagles could use some improved play. Some film-grinders have said that Landon Dickerson hasn’t looked as good this season as he has in years past. With that said, he seems to be playing through something practically every week. Cam Jurgens has been solid, which is about all anyone could have asked for out of a guy replacing Jason Kelce. He has looked dynamic as a runner in space and I hope he can continue to develop further and further. Mekhi Becton has been a nice story this season at right guard, but he has been much better in run blocking than he has in pass protection.

It’s also worth giving a shoutout to both Fred Johnson and Tyler Steen, who have played a notable amount of snaps and/or games filling in for Mailata, Lane, and/or Becton so far this season. Fred’s most notable game came against the Bengals where he locked down Trey Hendrickson for the entire game. Steen has been the inverse of Becton, where he has looked better than Becton in pass protection, but worse in run blocking. Both have held their own when filling in this season. In Jeff Stoutland, I trust.

Miles Sanders will 100% be gone after this year with basically nothing owed to him.
