I'm a first 2 last 2 guy for Menzingers

First few for Gaslight but won't listen much for reasons I've detailed in here before

SLS is borderline unlistenable for me because of how miserable the dude is but i've gone into it before and dont need to rehash it over again.

 

I see what you’re saying. There’s a smaller touring act Bobby Mahoney that does that sort of thing and they’re from NJ lol. But I mean to me thats kinda splitting hairs. In a way you could argue that My Chemical Romance is the modern Cure, but, the Cure ushered in an entirely new way people looked at music, while MCR grew OUT of a trend that was already getting more and more popular and they just were one of the few who did it the best.

There’s a direct line between Springsteen and those bands yes - but in the same way that A LOT of genres were inspired by Springsteen (including Americana and Alt Country etc) not in a way that’s like, they’re replicating his standalone, inimitable status in music. That’s the difference to me, that a Menzingers or a MCR is more derivative of where music in general was going and how popular rock was becoming a lot more punk heavy since the mid 90s so it has less of that “this has unique appeal for the time period” allure to it.

It’s one of those “if you’ve heard a few bands in that scene, you pretty much got the gist of it” things and I personally leaned heavier into, like… some OTHER emo band (Alexisonfire, Thursday) or some OTHER heartland punk band (SLS) and it felt redundant to include another similar band I like slightly less in my rotation

eh I see it. Not exactly the same thing but same subcategory of a genre whatever people decide to call it

 

It's one of those things where like they're not 1:1 but if The Gaslight Anthem tours with Spanish Love Songs you're not gonna be like "wtf that's weird", the audience is likely listening to both

 

yeah like when Origami Angel toured with Pool Kids

very very different approaches to appeal to a similar subset of music

 

They're obviously like the Killers

 

They did tour with them in Europe and I was super jealous lol

 

it is all “thomas-core” to me lol
