That sucks. Can’t disagree more based on my experience with them. “Super energetic and tight” would be exactly how I’d describe their performance. But it was a hometown Baltimore performance right after they released their album and were probably still “in the zone” about it, so maybe that made a huge difference

eh. that’s disrespectful lol. there is plenty of that kind of music and it isn’t the bands we’re mentioning. it’s springsteen and petty stuff for people who like punk music. there just have been diminishing returns. the best versions of those songs in that style have been written.

It's very good, I'm about a third of the way through though so a lot to go

I just don’t like comparing it to Springsteen, the Menzingers / Gaslight arent superstar icons like that haha. You can see the influence but eh it’s still mostly music made for punk rock circles and doesn’t really transcend that

 

Also Hootie & the Blowfish is a great band with meaningful lyrics and easy melodies that wasn’t an insult haha - I was just more so laughing at how much more into heavy rock music the average millennial is than prior generations, and how the previous generations version of what you’d call “easy listening” is wildly different

sure. i think saying hootie and the blowfish conjures up a certain kind of music further from what we’re discussing than springsteen. like, springsteen + punk is absolutely what gaslight was doing. you know they’ve played with the boss on stage before right?

 

I like when The Menzingers were scrappy and noisy I think that was a lot of fun

 

i’m not denigrating hootie. “radio pop rock but emo” is not the same thing as “heartland rock but punk”

 

Lotta genre talk

 

eh, i think 'superstar' is a bad descriptive term but, Menz and Gaslight are probably the premier acts from that era/genre and there have very clearly been a ton of bands that have emerged trying implicitly to emulate that style. i dont disagree that a lot of it is straight up Not Good (be careful how you talk about C*ld Y*ars on this website), but its a very obvious influence.

One of those bands trying really hard to emulate the style popularized by The Gaslight Anthem is The Gaslight Anthem

i also think brian fallon is in a different category. he absolutely has a “star” quality to him the others lack, even if it didn’t transfer to his solo career necessarily

couldn’t tell you the names of any of the guys in the bands downstream from them but i’m guessing there’s a chad or a gary or two

I think the last 3 albums from the menzingers are their best but I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to them or gaslight anymore and I rarely ever am.
