I’ve always wondered this. If it’s cold enough for the surface of a lake to be frozen, is it not cold enough for the fish to be inactive, like in a hibernation state? Or is it a lot warmer near the bottom?

It depends on the depth of the water. There is something called a thermocline towards the bottom that traps “heat” so the fish are less lethargic if it’s deep enough.



The general rule is to look for fish that are around 15ft and deeper. With new technology you see that fish move around water(in general) more than we thought. Which is especially true during the winter months. Just not a quick.

 

All those red spots are fish. They range all the way from 10ft down to about 16.
