Eli shouldn’t be in the hall of fame solely because I’m mad at him for 2 reasons

This is low key why I think Dave disagrees :eyes:

...it's not particularly low key. I've plainly said "I couldn't possibly care less about Eli's regular season stats. The regular season is for Jags fans."

"Letting Eli in is an insult to Kurt Warner." Bro what. Tom Brady had 3 different Kurt Warner careers so if we're doing that no one is allowed in until Mahomes retires lol.

The argument against Kurt Warner is a lack of longevity, and I'd be fine with both him and TD not being in because they lack it. But, at least both dudes were THE best player in the league for a period of time. A standard of "top of their position for a long time, and probably the best at least once or twice" feels fair for your elite collection of people.

Was Eli ever actually a top 3 QB in any season? He wasnt a top 10 dude in that 2007-08 run. He was at least vaguely top 5ish in that 2011-2012 season. Probably spent more than half his career outside the top 5 QBs...and maybe just as much as barely a top 10 dude. Its just crazy to put him alongside the other guys from this era

If you've only had two good years idk how you can argue that's a HOFer

Pretty simple actually. He's a dude who is 11th in passing yards, 11th in passing Tds, Is a two time Super Bowl MVP and those two super bowls came against the greatest coach, the greatest QB and arguably the single greatest roster in NFL history.

So the difference between Carson Palmer and Eli Manning in their HOF worthiness is that Carsons defense didn't carry him to a Super Bowl win in just the right year?

I mean, we have eyes...we post in an NFL forum...we've watched a LOT of Eli Manning games. Dude is NOT an all-time great QB

You're right. I definitely don't have eyes, or did not watch Eli Manning in the Super Bowl. You nailed it.

Like, I truly couldn't care less about changing you or elf's mind at this point. Think what you want but to just be like "nah, you clearly just didn't watch" or whatever or pretend that Carson Palmer's argument is anywhere near the same is just...idk. Really stupid?

Didnt say you didnt, Im saying you absolutely have to have watched, what, 50+ Eli Manning games? You've watched Eli play Peyton and Brady and Brees and Rodgers and the other dudes that are gonna be first ballot kinda guys. That he was great in the right couple doesn't mean he wasn't fairly average in the vast majority of them.

The Carson Palmer point is there cause he's 14th in yards and 15th in TDs. Not really far off Eli. And he's nowhere near the Hall. There's guys like Rivers or Ryan who probably arent getting in, despite having better stats across the board, and it being because of Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora is kinda funny.

I also 100% think guys like Rivers and Ryan and Stafford who put up big numbers shouldnt be in because, likewise, they were not consistently the top dudes. I think the standard should be really high, even if Joe Namath is somehow in there.

But Eli bugs me particularly because literally nobody at the time thought he was great. At least Ryan won MVP. At least Rivers and Palmer took 3rd one year. Not a single write dropped him an MVP vote or All-Pro vote. Bobby Wagner has more MVP votes!

Me: He was the MVP of those Super Bowls. He made two of the most important plays in NFL history.
    You: His defense carried him.

Like legit, I make my Eli > Peyton argument in jest normally but if this is what we're doing then I want Peyton discredited now. Right away.

I have absolutely no problem standing by "He was a average to pretty good QB for his career, but you can't tell the story of the 2005-2015 era of football without him so he goes in."

This is why I started with we view Hall of Fames differently.

I mean, it did. 5 sacks, 12 TFL on the most dynamic offense in NFL history is surely more stand out than 250yds 2TD/1INT, right? He was way more critical in their Week 17 game, by comparison. You also wont find me questioning his 2011-2012 SB run. He was genuinely good in those games and was surprisingly efficient in the SB itself. He earned that MVP award. The 2008 one, he won it because of the moment and because when in doubt, the QB wins it.

And this is what haunts me, of course. But I get it

You can't tell the story of 2012-2022 without quite a few players who absolutely shouldn't make it in, to be fair
