I’m so stoked yall and there is a direct path to me becoming the actual lead sommelier when the current one leaves. That’s easily a six-figure job at a restaurant the caliber of mine. I already know he’s not planning on staying more than a couple years because of life / investment plans with his wife, and he quite literally went to bat for me getting this position cause it wasn't originally in the hotel’s new year budget.

I can tell he sees something in me, and told me during my meeting with both managers that he’s not remotely worried about my ability to learn about, sell and elegantly describe new wines consistently cause he’s seen me do it. Part of the way he advocated for me was showing the higher ups the hard numbers of how much wine I sell without him even coming to the table, and I’ve been selling like multiple bottles a night all winter.

He also invited me to a very exclusive / private sommelier training course where I’m getting a fast-track in terms of learning everything I’ll need to know to get certified, it’s every Wednesday afternoon now I get to taste and decipher region specific characteristics of expensive staple wines all over the world. That’s gonna help me a lot cause I can sell the shit out of anything I’ve tasted, that’s where my passion for the detail and art really comes out.

I’ll have to learn how to rotate inventory and how to make smart business decisions about which wine to procure and how much to price it. But as organized and meticulous as I am, I already know that’s an ideal role for me. The biggest challenge for me will quite literally be going from a “few minutes late” person to a “always 15-30 mins early” person. He stressed that it’s no longer just “leave enough time to set up the dining room before pre-shift meeting” and now it’s “I’m bringing you with me to exclusive tasting events and meetings with actual wine distribution professionals and it reflects poorly on me if you’re not punctual”.

I know that shit is easy for most people but it’s a huge challenge for my specific cocktail of ADHD / autism - I’m horrible at long term time management. But I gotta keep my eye on the prize. I’m better than I used to be, my late now is more like 5-8 minutes (max 10) rather than 20-30, but I know that if I wanna make six figures one day, being a consummate professional in every way and never being tardy has to start now. That means not just “leaving earlier” (obviously I already try that) but actually improving how responsible I am about my daily life so I don’t fall into stressed out catch-up mode with errands and shit (which is most of what makes me late)
