have truly never understood Post- in relation to genres

 

it's really great for being their 11th record

 

this isn't an objective definition or anything, but generally i perceive it like, artists who started in that original culture but then started thinking outside the box and doing fusion with other genres to push boundaries

 

genre terms don’t matter

 

of course over time that gets distorted cause like. Post-punk started in the 80s. So you can be inspired by post-punk bands now but not have a 70s punk background cause now post-punk is just the name of stuff like The Smiths, Joy Division, etc which is "classic" now

Ian MacKaye was in a hardcore band called Minor Threat and then wanted to start branching out with his next project Fugazi that stylistically went in a lot more directions, Fugazi is considered a seminal post-hardcore band. That's an example.

honestly there's no way to be fully objective about it all though cause then you have shit like No Wave which is like post-punk AND some other shit and you have post-punk and post-hardcore which are both direct descendants of punk but have no association with each other now etc (no one is calling The National a post-hardcore band lmao) and every line in the sand just gets washed away as soon as new bands follow up on that lol

so really yeah genres dont matter

 

just say i was right and keep it movin
